It took 10 days for MG Natonski’s joint task force to defeat the enemy forces and regain control of the city, killing or capturing over 3000 insurgents. They secured the main MSR highway 10, which helped support the overall MNF-I mission. The full spectrum joint task force pushed forcefully though the city with a high operation tempo to ensure the embedded enemies would be destroyed and unable to call in reinforcements. Isolation, integrated operations including use of information operations to shape the battle field and minimizing collateral damage shaped the battlefield for follow on stability operations. By minimizing collateral damage, the Iraqi view of U.S. forces changed dramatically.…

Assuming command of the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) is an honor and a privilege. It is truly a humbling opportunity to be selected to command an exceptional unit with a storied history of mission readiness and success. The past few weeks of observing the unit, in addition to, careful analysis of more recent historical documents from Army research organizations such as the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) and Center for Army Leadership (CAL) have provided necessary insight in understanding the unit’s current state of readiness, culture, and organizational structure. However, derived from this insight, it is supposed that the 4th ABCT’s current operating conditions contain numerous culture gaps and friction points between…

The regiment had a conspicuous history, and they also had a talented band as well as meaningful insignia. In order to enhance my understanding of the Regiment, I decided to research even further. The 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (4ABCT) proud tradition of excellence throughout its history took a turn for the worse with its recent deployment and redeployment issues from Afghanistan. An organizational change within 4ABCT is paramount in order to return to its storied heritage of excellence by being a contributing member of the division. In order to complete the change from its current state to a well-respected unit, I would execute a blended version of the seven-step vision process with John Kotter’s eight-stage model to create successful and lasting change. First, I would begin with conducting an initial assessment of the brigade prior to taking command, which is the first step in the seven-step vision process. From this initial…

“It was truly a surprise when I found out I was assigned to the First Calvary Air Division upon arriving in Camron Bay, Vietnam. A surprise and the most prestigious honor” said Frank Pangborn as he sat formally in his seat sporting a tie, shoulder sleeve and wallet that had the First Calvary insignia imprinted. As a Vietnam War veteran, this division is one that brings great pride to not only Pangborn but to each and every soldier that dedicated a period of their life to serving this country. The First Calvary Division was established in 1921 and has had a tremendous influence in World War 2, the Korean War, Vietnam and in more recent years, the Middle East Wars in the 1990s, Iraq and Afghanistan. Their most notable success was during the Vietnam War but their impact over the…

A few months after this, the impregnable coalition, which was led by the United States, launched its famous Operation Desert Storm, usually noted as one of the most decisive, quick and bloodless victories of all time. After just a few days of combat, the Coalition eventually was able to liberate Kuwait, destroy the Iraqi army at a very minimal cost in casualties. The amount of Iraqi losses was large (around 22,000 killed and 60,000 wounded and/o captured.) In contrast, the United States only suffered approximately 150 battle deaths.…

Over the last 1.5 years, the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) has undergone significant change. Following a nine month deployment to Afghanistan, the Brigade appears to be overcome by stress, fatigue, leadership, and ethics issues. While many might categorize these as normal post deployment occurrences, they appear to run much deeper. The events of the previous deployment coupled with the death of the Brigade Commander, Brigade Sergeant Major and a Battalion Commander appear to be the critical events that triggered the downward slide of the Brigade.…
