13 Reasons Why a novel by Jay Asher contains many effective literary devices. However, the most compelling technique that Asher uses is his ability to provide effective dialogue that reaches out to readers directly. In my opinion the most powerful quote that Asher writes is during cassette number three after Hannah explains how traumatizing it was to be targeted by Marcus, the school body president and most unsuspecting character. Asher has the main Character Clay react to these events with this heart wrenching quote, “I’m listening to someone give up. Someone I knew. Someone I liked. I’m listening.
