13 Reasons Why the series was better than the book. 13 Reasons Why (originally wrote in 2007) is a tale of a teenage who commits suicide. Before her taking her life, she makes thirteen cassette recordings. The cassettes contained the thirteen individuals who bullied or made her situation worse. Each person on the cassettes has to listen and pass them on to the next person on the list. She states that if anybody fails to pass them along, a copy of the recordings will be made public. The tapes also come with a map so they can physically follow as they listen to her story. The book and series are similar in the storyline, but differ in the setting, events, and ending. Not only do you get to see what you read come to life, but you get to see the impacts of the bullying. The book was set in 2007 in a town called Crestmont. The book does not give much description of the town itself. Moreover, most of the bullying Hannah fell victim to occur via text message and word of mouth. Even though Facebook and Twitter existed back then, they were not as powerful as today. For example, the picture Justin took of Hannah sliding down the slide with her dress flipped up was pass around through mouth and by Justin showing it off. The series was set in 2016 in Crestmont. The bullying and rumors spread via text message, gossip, and social media. The picture that Justin took of Hannah was send to the whole school via his iPhone by Bryce, which made the impact even greater than the book. The time differences create a more effective way to bullying in the series as oppose to the
