The awareness dates back to early movies such as Dead Poets Society, and the large amount of other onscreen portrayals. Unlike others, 13 Reasons Why uses point of view by keeping a camera on Hannah throughout her sexual assault, bullying and eventually suicide. “When these things happen in books, movies, or TV shows, we don’t see it, and we’re comfortable with that,” producers say. “But then we wonder why people in our culture still don’t understand how horrific those things are.” Those exact scenes are what have sparked great amounts of controversy, both positively and negatively. For instance, some schools have banned students from speaking of the show while on school grounds, others have sent home letters to students family’s warning them of the content that is presented within the show. These struggles are prominent concerns in today’s society, more specifically in the culture of today's teens. 13 Reasons Why uses point of view as well as imagery within the series which allows viewers to gain insight into the tragic world of a suicidal teen. These elements also allow viewers to gain an understanding and awareness of suicide provoking situations in today’s world. Whether viewers gained a positive or negative impact away from the series, what matters most is that the show accomplished its goal of creating a more broad awareness for suicide and other teenage struggles. This awareness has spread worldwide controversy over the topic, and that's exactly that goal producers and creators had in mind. These elements not only impact individuals personally, but they also impact those around them.
