Life is full of amazing memories. Some of them are joyful and excited while others are depressing and got wrenching. Whatever the memory may be they always seem to make a nest in the back of your mind. The book 13 Gifts written by Wendy Mass, Mass creates a story that grasps the beginning of new memories. During 13 Gifts the main character, Tara, creates new memories by finding herself, discovering secrets, and paying off debt.
“The sidelines may be safer but life is played on the field.” (Ch. 23, pg 339). This is a quote by the main character after she has learned the true meaning of herself. To Tara the task seems almost impossible to finish but with the help of her new friends she completes it with time to spare. Tara is told by a mysterious shop owner that she must find thirteen items as consequence for trying to sell off her uncle's magazine. The list is not some ordinary list like groceries that are easily accessible. The list consists of a number of props from a play. When Tara first receives the list she does not know that they are props. With help from her friends she travels throughout Willow Falls stumbling across the items. Once she has all the items she attempts to give them to the shop owner to pay off her debt but only discovers that the shop owner gave her the wrong lists. At this point Tara thinks that she will never be able to pay off her debt but the shop owner gives her a final option. Tara must put on the play. With only two weeks to the deadline Tara funds herself rushing around in search for actors and actresses, a director, a makeup crew and costumes. Luckily only days before the play is supposed to be air everything is set and ready to go. Once the play is done Tara has paid off her debt not only to the shop owner but also to society. Tara is relieved when she finds a note that says “Happy birthday to the girl who thought she wanted to sit this one out. Tell your mother her debt is repaid.” (Ch. 23, pg. 330)
13 Gifts’ storyline is based along Tara paying off her debt but it also has other underlying themes. Each themes whether it be finding yourself or discovering new secrets brings a set of new memories that are yet to come.
