In the movie 127 Hours, Aron Ralston finds himself trapped in a remote slot canyon in the middle of the Utah desert. Over 20 miles from camp and invisible to the bird's eye, Aron was completely alone. He had told nobody where he was going or how long he would be gone putting him entirely off the grid. As time dragged on, Aron’s options became more and more insufficient. In a last ditch effort to save his life, he realized that his only choice was to amputate his own arm. Over the course of five days, trapped in a narrow slot canyon, Aron Ralston displayed incredible mental toughness, determination, and composure. Mental toughness is a very large part of being a strong and self dependent leader. In order to cut through his arm, Aron was required break both bones in his forearm. At any moment while he was in the canyon, Aron could have been overcome by his fate and panicked. Instead, he maintained his composure and worked through different ways to solve the problem. He started by trying to pull his arm out but when that didn't work he began chipping away at the rock with his knife. When it was evident he was making no progress, he rigged an elaborate pulley system to lift the boulder. When the pulley rendered no results, Aron resorted to amputating his own arm. Over the course of his journey, Aron was able to maintain composure no matter what the circumstances. In a leadership position, it is key to maintain composure in times of trial. For me, it can be very easy to become frustrated with subordinates. In times like that I know that I need to maintain composure instead of yelling or becoming aggressive. If something goes wrong, having a calm and collected mindset is important for problem solving. By maintaining composure, I am able to come across as a more professional and knowledgeable
