Slavery has been written off as part of the pre-history of our world, slavery was a cruel and racist system that took abode in the dark times of the ever so controversial American history; slavery was as systematic as it was functional. Director, Steve McQueen's new film, 12 Years a Slave, was a disquieting reminder of the traumatizing, horrible and unjust treatment that black African-American slaves were forced to endure with or without consent. Although the slavery period is deep in the past, some audiences/people around the world had little to no knowledge at all on the general topic of slavery, according to statistics found by CNN film review, approximately out of 100% 27.8% of audiences that watched 12 years a slave had little knowledge …show more content…
(Director) Steve McQueen’s intentions were far from delivering past enactments in a good-looking and digressed manner, however his intentions were: to specifically deliver each and every scene in a graphic and raw form; by doing this, McQueen created a sense of authenticity to the film, which wasn’t over-exaggerated in any way, shape or form. The film was quite vivid when it came to displaying vibrant image of slaves being whipped and tortured both mentally and physical, the injuries that the laves endured where very graphically shown; in order to appropriately showcase the pure cruelty that white supremacist possessed in the slave periods. Many believe the background message and thesis of 12 years a slave falls on the extremely diverse and controversial issue of ‘racism’; racism has and still remains to be a dominant moral and ethical issue within the realms of society, without a single doubt it is patently visible that the majority of the film is most definitely fuelled by racism. For example there countless of scenes in the movie where the term ‘nigger’ is frequently used in spite of black slaves. The taboo term ‘nigger’ is largely considered as a term of discrimination; which is why the film incorporated it in many scenes in order to emphasis unto audiences that racism and discrimination where the motives behind the crude torture and mistreatment of
