For example, when Patsey begs Northrup to end her life, it seems the movie has misunderstood the autobiography. Patsey simply only wanted to escape, not die (Berlatsky, 2013). Also, the scene where Northup cheats on his wife did not happen, it was an idea solely created by the director to strengthen the feeling of helplessness and the horrors of slavery within the film (Berlatsky, 2013). As the movie shows, Northup did attempt to escape while he was travelling on the slave ship, however the other slave, Robert, did not die after being stabbed by the sailor, instead he died of smallpox (History vs Hollywood, 2017). Though, in the opinion of many film critics and historians, these errors help to more accurately portray the opinions and beliefs surrounding slavery at the time (Berlatsky, 2013). These beliefs being that blacks were considered inferior to whites and how the majority of slave owners lived in the southern states of America. Historians are in agreement that the film ‘12 Years A Slave’ does an excellent job of accurately portraying slavery and it's truly horrific nature, even though some of the exact details of Northup’s story have been fudged (Berlatsky,

When discussing slavery we mention how badly the slaves were treated but 12 Years A Slave is a movie that bring this atrocities to life through the eyes of Solomon Northup. This movie was adapted from the book written by Solomon Northup himself where he shows what slavery in the south truly looked like. He was a man who had his freedom stolen from him but thankfully he lived to tell the tale. His story shows us how black slaves were bought and sold at the market, what the transition from free to field slave looked like, what a normal day on the plantation was like, and how they were treated on these plantations. The way in which slaves were bought and sold was just as bad at Steven McQueen portrayed it, if not worst.…

However, as mentioned earlier, it is my argument that each of these films also furthers the intrinsic racism that is still found in many American people today in various ways. 12 Years A Slave provides a very clear example of this issue. For the most part, this was a movie that was widely celebrated for its graphic, moving depiction of Solomon Northrup’s experience as a slave in Antebellum America. The primary focus of the film on the brutal treatment of Northrup came at the hands of two slave masters, Tibeats and Edwin Epps. Both of these men were ruthless slave masters who relied on the whip heavily.…

The instance Robert’s murder on the steamboat to Louisiana in Steve McQueen’s film drastically departs from what Solomon Northup describes in his narrative. McQueen chooses to highlight the brutality of slavery over out the economic considerations surrounding the enslaved’s bodies in doing so. McQueen chooses to include visceral scenes in his film eschewing the less provocative economic considerations in Solomon’s narrative. The film 12 Years a Slave fails to fully interact with the economics of the slave economy.…

The institution of American slavery is widely considered to be one of the most horrific that humanity has ever seen. Slaves were forced by their owners to work long, hard days in the poor conditions of the southern United States. Slaves were often reprimanded through extreme forms of abuse such as whippings and beatings, even if they completed the task that they were commanded to do. Slaves, however, were not the only group of people that slavery had a negative impact on. In Linda Brent 's narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, the author claimed, “slavery is a curse to whites as well as to the blacks” (Brent 56).…

Upon reading “Twelve Years a Slave” I immediately became aware that even when black man was considered free in America, he or she was never truly given the same rights as whites nor were they allotted the safety and security of their citizenship. Solomon Northup was a well-educated, respected, family-oriented, free black man in the community yet he was still kidnapped into slavery for twelve years without anyone discovering that he did not belong because of his skin color. This heartbreaking narrative provided so much perspective on the dehumanization of black individuals in America during the course of slavery. This especially rang true in Solomon’s case because so many white individuals and slave holders were very aware that clearly Solomon was not born into slavery, yet it took years before anyone was willing to stand for him and the injustice he was experiencing. Slavery was largely a convenience that while many opposed, many were not willing to stand…
