Throughout the book, 12 Years A Slave, the author Solomon Northup decided to share his memoir. Northup gives an illustration via his book describing how his rights as a man were stripped away after being born and raised a freeman in the northern states; Saratoga, New York. The book describes deceivements, which subjected black men into slavery. Black men were sold as property to white plantation owners to do the grueling work and suffer punishments as their owners saw fit. Slavery is appalling and even today those practices of deceivement still work; although, nowadays those practices are not used specifically for slavery they are nonetheless cruel and illicit. Based on the film and the book, 12 Years A Slave, religion is described to be forced upon those in slavery during sabbaths - instilling the owner’s perspective of the bible. For example, Peter Tanner reads Luke 12:47 during a sabbath reading and pauses frequently to make his point towards his slaves; that they shall obey their masters or face the consequences of being flogged until baring stripes. …show more content…
For example, racism still plays a prevalent role between blacks and whites. People organize riots because they believe injustice is caused because of skin color. Whether or not the person was really to blame seems to be unimportant because “black lives matter”. In response, white people created the counterstatement “white lives matter.” There seems to be a no win-win in theses cases; racism is still a big issue in society. Similarly,just as Solomon was kidnapped to be sold nowadays kidnapping also occurs. Not just to be subjected into slavery but for other purposes, as well as, teenagers and children sold into child labor or made use of their bodies to sell their organs. These are everyday predicaments that many are not aware of and should learn more about. Astonishing as it may sound, slavery is still occurring in the world
