Life for a slave in the book, “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson wasn’t always easy. There were different types of slaves in this book and they all had different jobs that were very difficult for some of them. Some were even sold to other people and some slaves had to work as labourers which made them have a lot of injuries that sometimes led to death. Many slaves’ life included plantations, small farms, and their city. They all were different especially when they were all from different parts of the world and different colonies.…
“Learning to Read and Write”, by renown Frederick Douglass, makes an effective argument against slavery by using pathos to appeal to the reader 's emotion. The document explained from his point of view, that he was treated “perfectly” fine as a house slave before slavery came into full effect. He also expounds on the fact, once slavery was fully effective, his mistress, Mrs.Hugh, changed for the worse toward him. In the text it states,“Unders it’s influence, the tender heart became stone, and the lamblike disposition gave way to one of tiger-like fierceness.” Creating visuals using animals is the author’s way of demonstrating who his mistress was before slavery had been enforced and the person she had swiftly become after.…
12 Years a Slave 12 Years a Slave is a book about a black man named Samuel Northrup who was born in the free state of New York. He was then tricked into going to Washington D.C. where he was sold into slavery. He was sent to the South and held in Louisiana for 12 years. He was then released with the help up friends by writing and communicating with them.…
One quote from the chapter that really stood out to me and put this whole thing in perspective was “The North for blacks was not the promise land. Although they were not slaves, they were hardly free”. Another thing I thought was really interesting was Fredrick Douglass’s story. I’ve heard about him many times before but, it was always just a brief overview of his roll in history, never in depth like in this book.…
Winston Churchill’s “History is written by the victors”, was accepted as truism. Anything that happened in the past, history, can be distorted, changed, and even disappear. This may happen by the writers (in charge) writing what they want to hear, rather than what has actually been said; this can be done for many reasons, including propaganda, or covering up the ugly truth. Howard Zinn, an American historian, for the allegations stated above, wanted to review history from the other side, from the viewpoint of the oppressors. It might be a valid idea, using a slave narrative as a method of gathering information to study history when discussing the Slave Era.…
Frederick Douglass’s autobiography was immensely powerful and influential due to the fact that it provided real-life evidence of the horrors of enslavement from a personal, first-hand point of view. By giving the readers examples directly from his own life, Douglass made the evidence indisputable and more reliable, as there was no way to disagree with him about his own life story of enslavement. Finally, the fact that Douglass had the courage to use real names for all the characters in his autobiography, including his own, made his story even more influential, as he held nothing back from the reader. At the time, it was very uncommon for runaway slaves to do this, as these details could facilitate the recapturing process. However, Douglass was true to his word, as he fully transformed from being “broken in body, soul, and spirit” to “bold defiance,” making his story even more…
Anthony Osorio 51 History Period 4 William Grimes Everyone wants freedom, but what lengths are you willing to go to obtain it? Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, authors during the Harlem Renaissance, used their poetry and short stories to challenge ideas about race and the division it caused in America. The narrators in Hughes’ “Theme for English B” and Hurston’s “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” are both in the process of exploring their racial identities, yet while the narrator in Hurston’s story embraces her differences, the speaker in Hughes’ poem is more focused on questioning the aspects that cause him and his white classmates to differ. Nonetheless, Hughes and Hurston both use a common theme of racial identity as well as symbolism and the use of metaphor, to explain the struggle of being African-American in the 20th century. In Hughes’ poem “Theme for…
Slave narratives offer a first person account of the experiences of individuals and their experiences during slavery. They can also provide much insight into the realities of the past. In an interview by Adella S. Dixon on July 28, 1937, Della Briscoe tells the story of her time as a slave on the Georgia plantation. Della Briscoe lived on a large plantation in Putnam County, Georgia owned by David Ross. He was described by Mrs. Briscoe as the richest planter in the county.…
From the very first time that Northup is enslaved in Washington, he notices all of the women surrounding him. In his book, he gives the reader a detailed account their marital statuses, children, skills, personalities and physical attributes. Essentially, male and female slaves are treated differently. Throughout his book, Northup portrays differences in labor, demands and expectations of masters from female slaves. When Northup first meets Eliza in Burch’s slave pen, they are transported to a ship that will send them to the south, where they can be sold to other slave masters (Northup 53).…
Rappers misuse their influence at times and rap about insignificant topics that focus on consumerism, such as rapping about cars and money, and objectifying women. The way rap music is portrayed in the media seems to capture these trivial topics rather than the important social issues some rappers discuss. However, there are few rappers who dare comment on social issues, two being Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West. Lamar and West write music about important social topics such as racial injustice and racism in America, whereas other rappers are ignoring these issues. Lamar’s most recent song, “The Blacker The Berry,” talks about the institutionalized hardships black people are still facing, such as economic inequity and harmful social perceptions,…

The above advertisement appears in issue 6 of the Dawn of tomorrow, a Black newspaper published in London Ontario in the latter half of the 1930’s. The tiny publication describes the use of brown stockings as a way to bridge the “color-line” in Paris, it uses the color nigger Brown to describe the exact shade of the stockings being marketed. In marketing this new fad it could only be concluded that through the steps at nationalization of the importance of equality between the races. In the context, a reader can determine two distinctly opposing representations of the use of the term “colorline” as a selling point of the article (ie the stockings). It either A. emphasizes the difference between being black and white, so much so that it becomes…
They actively opposed the standards forced upon them, such as illiteracy and total obedience. In Douglass’ first autobiography, Narrative of the Life…
The Slavery of Ignorance Slavery is the ability to allow ignorance to take away opportunity created by knowledge. This system has and will always be used against anyone that lacks education, keeping them in a state of unawareness. Fredrick Douglass is also an example, not of just slavery, but how gaining knowledge can overcome this system that is not just a physical state of the body. Slavery is also a condition of the mind, due to the inability to receive education. The life of Douglass is a perfect example of this point because he started out as an ignorant child slave with no hope of ever coming out of this wretched life, but he is unique with enlightenment at a young age realizing his fate could be overcome with knowledge.…
