Watching 12 Years a Slave and Gangs of New York is not an easy thing to do. The scenes are brutal and detailed. 12 Years a Slave is a movie that presents the hardships of slavery—separation of families, rape, and physical punishment. While the Gangs of New York depicts New York City in the mid eighteen-century, a time in where Irish immigrants were unwelcomed, politicians were corrupt, and the streets were unsafe. Some may argue that the film-makers of these movies focus on violence and other dramatic aspects of life, at the expense making a good movie. For instance, many free blacks during slavery were still sold into slavery with any regard to their rights. This is seen at the beginning of the film when our main character, Solomon Northup, is drugged and taken away from his family, only to be taken to the South where he would be auction as a slave. During the Antebellum Era, slave narratives were prominent historical sources that gave great insight to the first-hand experience of slaves in America. As they signified to white America the true horrors and exploitation of the institution of slavery from the witness accounts of enslaved African Americans who actually experienced it. Why is it important to document hidden histories? Before viewing Slavery by Another Name (2012), I was not fully aware of the atrocities committed against African Americans after slavery had been abolished. I knew that newly freed slaves had a hard time adjusting to freedom, but I never fathomed the oppression and torment they were subjected to as free Americans. My history classes throughout my education never included information regarding involuntary servitude and laws that were created to deliberately re-enslave African Americans and prevent them from having mobility.…

Twelve Years a Slave was not only an abolitionist novel but it exposed the hypocrisy resulting from slavery. He said, “I could not comprehend the justice of that law, or that religion, which upholds or recognizes the principle of slavery;” (Northup 53). From the eyes of a black man the laws, beliefs, and ideology of the United States did not make any sense to…

Northup described a horrific ordeal faced by many slave women back in the day. Beatings occurring at the hands of the slave master’s mistress only further complicated the lives of slaves. This is especially the case since they often had no choice but to entertain the slave master’s advances. The female slaves of the day were truly pitted in a dreadful compromising situation. Their impossible choice was to decide between being used as a sex toy or face a beating for denying the master’s advances which essentially meant denying them of their desires.…

Slavery and the reconstruction era were two large portions in American history that contained minimal written records. How can historians learn about these slaves and their account of slavery and emancipation? Slave masters held a tight grip on power over their slaves by kept their slaves illiterate. Originally only whites had letters, diaries, and first hand accounts about this peculiar institution. The rise of oral testimony gave the slaves, who had the courage to speak up, the opportunity to speak out against the horrors of living from the bottom of the rail.…

Watching this film broadened my view of how the society I live in, works. Being black in America is truly one of the most horrific and challenging experiences a human being can go through. In America, slavery has been reincarnated through the decades to the Jim Crow laws and in present day, the prison system. Since the coming of our ancestors two centuries ago, our people have been mistreated and denied basic rights. Prior to watching The 13th, although I was not ignorant of the present issues in society, I was definitely unaware of the severity and depth of institutional racism.…

The film 12 years a slave was one of the most intense films we’ve watched thus far. It was a touching and an emotional film to watch over all. 12 years a slave showed several themes, one of the themes that stood out to me more bravery, bravery because Soloman had to endure 12 years a slave, even though he was born a free man. Throughout it all, he remained hopeful and brave for his family. His character is beyond beautiful and strong, he never changed the way he felt towards his family being away from them for 12 years, and we also see the way he helps the other slaves in one way or another, like Patsy.…

Django Unchained and 12 years a Slave are two films that fall under the genre “torture porn”. Brutality torture and violence committed against another person was the main focus in both films. Barone and Schafer shared the same view that 12 years a slave was a horror show, scrutinizing the dark side of humanity, which strayed away from slavery in American history. Schafer pointing out that Solomon the main character was not seen for the person he truly was and instead focusing only on his discrimination and suffering. Brown suggested that slaves could not write or leave behind there personal experiences at that time which I agree with because information could be taken out of context exaggerated or written from a completely dissimilar view.…

(Director) Steve McQueen’s intentions were far from delivering past enactments in a good-looking and digressed manner, however his intentions were: to specifically deliver each and every scene in a graphic and raw form; by doing this, McQueen created a sense of authenticity to the film, which wasn’t over-exaggerated in any way, shape or form. The film was quite vivid when it came to displaying vibrant image of slaves being whipped and tortured both mentally and physical, the injuries that the laves endured where very graphically shown; in order to appropriately showcase the pure cruelty that white supremacist possessed in the slave periods. Many believe the background message and thesis of 12 years a slave falls on the extremely diverse and controversial issue of ‘racism’; racism has and still remains to be a dominant moral and ethical issue within the realms of society, without a single doubt it is patently visible that the majority of the film is most definitely fuelled by racism. For example there countless of scenes in the movie where the term ‘nigger’ is frequently used in spite of black slaves. The taboo term ‘nigger’ is largely considered as a term of discrimination; which is why the film incorporated it in many scenes in order to emphasis unto audiences…
