12 years a slave is a film directed by Steve Mcqueen.12 years a slave is the true story of Solomon Northup an educated and free black man living in new york in the 1840s. He is married to Anne hampton and has two children daughter Margaret and son Alonzo. In 1841 two con men offered him work playing the violin in a circus in washington D.C. There he was drugged, kidnapped, and subsequently sold as a slave. He would then be the property of several different slave masters until he was released twelve years later.

A main idea in the film twelve years a slave is culture and upbringing. It was astonishing seeing how people black and white reacted to black people being beaten and killed. Men and Woman were all bought up to believe what was happening was ‘normal’ and that it was ‘ok’ to see a black person being beaten or killed. Examples of this from the film include when the blacks were being whipped at the plantation and everyone watched or continued working as if nothing had happened. Another example from the film is when solomon is hanging from a rope and standing on his tip toes trying to survive and everyone at the plantation walks

During the 1840s in America it was acceptable to hold, own and kill a black person. If you saw a black person in the street being beaten in the street you would see know one try and stop it. Just because their skin was a different colour it made it acceptable. People back then thought black people were closer related to animals than white people. An example of this from the film is when Mr Epps says to Bass ‘ Comparing me to a black man is like comparing me to a baboon’. I was surprised to find that blacks were considered baboons that could speak and that whites people were much more superior. In my opinion this was a stupid accusation because blacks and whites looked exactly the same except for the fact one of them had dark

Throughout the book, The Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, and the movie, 12 Years a Slave, we see many ways in which masters, overseers, and owners inhumanely manipulate their slaves, and how Solomon and Frederick resist. Within the centuries of slavery in the United States from 1619 to 1865 dehumanization took a huge toll on American slave’s lives, “For the African Americans, slavery reduced them into poverty and products by dehumanizing them from their ability to be considered actual people” (Capstick 1). Throughout slavery slaves were so low in social class that they were thought of as property, not humans. Over time we see Frederick and Solomon adapt to their surroundings by finding and creating ways to resist…

Throughout each of the narratives we’ve read, all of them help to put in perspective the condition of slavery, but Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, was able to delve deeper into that condition by giving a portrayal of life of someone who was not only a slave, but a black woman living under slavery. Her story had many turning points, upward struggles, downward spirals, and eventual triumphs, but her greatest triumph was over her master. Her first act of true defiance against the lecherous advances of her master, Dr. Flint was deciding to sacrifice the innocence he so desired and bear her first child. Through this choice, Jacobs is able to create an even deeper narrative that covers a broader scope for her intended audience.…

Harriet Jacobs was an African American slave that, after many harsh trials, was able to obtain her freedom, along with her children, by escape to a free state. Jacobs is responsible for her own writings, in the sense that she both wrote them and published them herself, which is remarkable because during this time it was uncommon for slaves to be able to read and write. Jacobs’ writings were later recognized as “major work of African American literature” and an “essential document for history of slavery”. “New Slaves” With laws implemented to create an intranational drug war, a “new slave” system has ultimately been a way to keep the status quo. As Howard Thurman believes, everyone should treat each other as equal children of God and love one another. By the deceit of a “colorblind” legal system, the inequality of whites and colored, rich and poor, remains. I believe all of us, as voters, must put effort into becoming educated on principles of love and equality, so we can bring about new ideas which bring value to all people, regardless of race, religion, or class.…

In the movie, 12 Years a Slave a 2013 film that follows the life of a man who was once a free man and was kidnapped and sold into slavery. In the film we see many instances where slavery had a dehumanizing effect on other slaves. I examined a scene about 45 minutes into the film which shows the main character Solomon Northup who goes by “Platt” was out on the plantation in Louisiana building a house for other slaves to live in when the plantation overseer came over to him and told him he was using the wrong nails to build the house. Solomon insisted that he was using the right nails and the two of them argued for a few moments until the overseer told him that he needed to strip because he was going to whip him. Solomon refused to strip…
