Dear 12 year-old Roman This is 17 year-old Roman. I bet you have a lot of questions to ask me like if I have abs or if I have a hot model girlfriend. To let you know I don't have either of those. I am writing to you because there are more important things I need to tell you, than whether you have a hot model girlfriend or have abs. Life is short, so don't take any day for granted. You will experience difficult times, as well as great times. Family is all you will have in your life. Cherish them and always spend time with them. On December 24, 2014, our aunt Silvia died and left her beautiful daughter with us to take care of, teach her of how good and bad this word can be, and to support her on the decisions she will make. Two years later

His Highness King Claudius and the gracious Queen Gertrude, daughter of Polonius the sweet Ophelia and members of the court. Today we gather and mourn the departed. My mentor, Polonius was loyal to the crown, loyal to his children, and a man who possessed a ceaseless thirst for knowledge. Although he was my master, I could at times call him a friend, as he sent me on many personal journeys to help protect those he loved the most, his family. As we stand here today, we must remember the achievements and accomplishments that Polonius worked tirelessly for Denmark.…

Watching a family member slowly die is one of the toughest experiences someone could go through. I had to do this when I was in my early teens with someone who I admired greatly and held a large place in my heart, my father. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS and Lou Gehrig 's disease, and I watched for almost two years as he lost the ability to use his right hand, then both of his legs, right up to the point where he couldn’t speak to us and he had to blink once for yes and twice for no. It hurt our family immensely to watch him struggle to ask for something as simple as water, but it hurt him in a way that was much worse than the disease itself. He had to look into the world hearing everyone go by his room…

Immediately after reading this section, I began to sympathize with the grandfather. His memory seems to be substantially impaired. Alzheimer's runs on my mother’s side of the family, so I know my fair share about memory loss and aging. My mom has had aunts who couldn't remember her face or name and watched as her grandparents’ memory deteriorated. Telemachos's grandfather's condition mirrors my kin's.…

The Funeral Oration of Pericles is a document which contains a funeral speech made by Pericles, a prominent Athenian politician. This speech was dictated, edited and transcribed by Thucydides, an Athenian historian and soldier in his written work, History of the Peloponnesian War. The speech was given at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BCE) and Thucydides fought in the war and lived and therefore wrote his works during the time of Pericles. The speech was made to boost the morale of the Athenian people and its military who needed to continue to fight. It discusses the attributes of Athenian culture and society that are superior to their neighbor’s, including government, independence, and family, social and recreational…

In the History of the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides recreates Pericles’ well-known funeral oration that was given at the end of the first year of the war. Funeral orations were traditionally delivered to honor the fallen in Athen’s many wars and campaigns against other countries. Thucydides remarks on this tradition, claiming that, “[the chosen orator] makes an appropriate speech in praise of the dead.” (2,34). Pericles’ oration differs from the typical arrangement of Athenian funeral speeches, and is instead designed to stir the spirit of the state through the glorification of Athen’s unique and storied nature and achievements.…

In his funeral oration, Pericles speaks of the intangible qualities that make Athens great, beyond their simple military might. He talks about how the Athenians treat other peoples and says “when we do kindnesses to others, we do not do them out of any calculations of profit or loss: we do them without afterthought, relying on our free liberality” (Thucydides 2.41). Pericles believes that every decision does not have to be made out of selfishness. According to this philosophy, one can and should show mercy merely because one has the ability to do so. The fundamental reason Pericles holds this position is because he views the world through the lense of self governance.…

The Roman Empire was at its highest peak during the reign of Augustus, in which he installed the idea of Pax Romana (meaning Roman peace) to bring peace, security, and civilized life to the Roman nation. However, even in the times of happiness and prosperity not all people welcomed the great Roman peace, as demonstrated by the troubles brewing in Egypt, Gaul, and Judea. As Rome began to falter under the economic, political, and military difficulties, many Romanized nations began to withdraw their support. The Roman nobles, rather than invest their money in the industries of Rome, chose to misuse their wealth, causing the economy to come to a halt. So, by the third century A.D. and the end of Marcus Aurelius reign, which ended Pax Romana, the…

Caesar is a romantic at heart, so he’d flirt with you constantly, showing his true feelings; if you were oblivious to this, he’d turn up the charm tenfold, until you finally realized. As a boyfriend, he’s definitely the type to fawn over you, and always hold your hand. He’s very affectionate so he loves to ruffle your hair, or trace his fingers over the scar on your eye. He loves the fact that you’re warm and supportive, as he can be very hot-headed, so your presence and words calm him. If he perceives you as distant, he’ll be discouraged at first, before stepping up and reaching out to you, mostly likely with a bouquet of flowers!…
