12 Year Old Me

Dear 12 year old me,

Congrats on making it to the 6th grade. You survived surgery on your leg last year and you’re dealing with a teacher who you think doesn’t like you. I can assure you she doesn’t. Just wait, she’ll say something later on that makes Syd smart off. (It’s kinda funny but I shouldn’t encourage you.) I’m about to give you the game plan/survival guide for you 7-10th grade years. Pay attention.

First, don’t bother with cheer tryouts. It’s not worth the stress you’re gonna put yourself under. Band is where you’re strong at. The band will bring instruments toward the end of the year for you to test out. Go straight to the clarinet. I know our little heart is set on flute (at least, it will be) but trust me on this. By tenth grade, you’ll have a solo and you’ll be first chair.

You’re gonna deal with your friends getting in relationships and breaking up all the time. It’s easy to feel left out of the dating pool when your friends are that way. Never fear, you’ll get your chance. I won’t tell you how it ends because it’s a good lesson for you to learn. And trust me, boys are not worth it. 16 year old you is wonder why younger me wanted a relationship so bad. Boys are the devil and will do whatever they can to hurt you so don’t trust the sweet talker who makes you feel special. The best friend is the right

Seventh grade, my second year now at what I thought to be the worst school in the world. On back to school night I met a man who would change my perspective on life completely, that man being Brandon Lilly. Henry Adams once said “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” At a mere five-foot four he appeared to be a kid minus the burly lumberjack beard that he possessed. I remember being skeptical at first because I had never had a male teacher before.…

When middle school had started, I expected for myself to do great because I believed I would. Though, there were times that I did struggle due to myself expecting for it to be easy.…

When freshmen year came, I started playing a variety of instruments including the trumpet, the saxophone, and the French horn. Although I did not continue playing these instruments as I did the other two, I learned that not everything instrument is a right fit for me and my likings. The experience taught me that everyone is unique and different, even if we were all musicians. When sophomore year came around, I started playing piano, and I loved it. I caught onto piano faster than any other instrument.…

I joined marching band too, but that's another story altogether. At the end of seventh grade there was no question as to if I would stay with the clarinet or not. I'll admit, even though I wasn't as good as some of my band mates I had become almost addicted to the clear clean notes that came out of it when I…

In junior high I was the low man on the totem pole and terrified of playing in front of people. I ended up being the last chair in eighth grade and decided then that even though I was not the best player, I could still practice and try to improve. By my freshman year, I had started gradually getting higher chairs in play tests. My sophomore year, I managed to get first chair in symphonic band and had my first solo in that year’s spring concert. That same year, I also tried out for all state band and district honor band where you have to learn twelve major scales, a melodic and harmonic scale, and the chromatic along with two prepared pieces of different styles, lyrical and technical.…

Through cheer I was able to learn that failing is an option for greatness, performing in front of an audience creates courage, it is alright to rely on others, managing my own time and becoming an adult, all creating me to become a better person. As Nicholas Carr and Gerald Graff has taught me how to incorporate and connect my passion to my learning for academic success. Their lessons are carried through, which I was able to finally realize and it opened my eyes as to how successful I have become after cheer. Overall, if I were to realize this sooner, then I would have had a better chance at succeeding high school. It is not too late for others though, I would personally recommend that younger students read these two…
