Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is well-known for its use of the 12-Step program model in treating addiction: A model copied and disseminated by many other similar programs. According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) (2014), the 12-step program or parts of it are utilized in approximately 74 percent of treatment facilities in the United States. However, something’s popularity or widely-acceptedness neither validates nor legitimizes its use.
