10th Grade English Reflective Report

I can reflect back on being in your 10th Grade English Class listening to you prepare my class and I for this very time in our lives. We are studying and will be exploring four objectives in my EN 213 Course here at Alcorn State University and I am almost certain that I am well prepared for them.

For each objective, I have my own perspective on what I think each one means and this is what will help me understand them even better. For example, our first objective is to read and appreciate literary texts. This objective is very much self-explanatory because we will be doing just what it says “read and appreciate” which means we will be reading a text and comprehending or understanding it to the extent where we can tell our instructor what happened in the text, why it happened, and what we think would have happened next. The second objective is to use the professional vocabulary of this academic field (Literary Studies). I think that this means that we will enhance our vocabulary to a collegiate level so that it will help us in our reading to understand some words authors may use in their writing which can be a barrier to comprehending a text if we don’t understand the vocabulary. Applying critical and analytical thinking skills is the next objective. Thinking critically and analytically I believe is when we will use information, think about it then draw conclusions and using different details in the text in order in order to describe what happened. The last objective to write logical, persuasive

I encountered all of these objectives my sophomore year in high school in your English class. These were four of the many objectives we had to cover in order to pass our English II State Test. You carefully broke down each objective and applied it to our everyday assignments, sometimes including all four in one assessment. It was not only helpful for the test but all of the other higher English classes I had to

Without adding these goals the reader would have no context for any future points made by the author. The author also makes sure to use great detail when describing each goal to ensure clarity of what each goal aims to accomplish. The author after establishing the goals of the class use two case studies of very different students to support their claims that these goals are the correct way to handle the class. The first case study uses a student named Jack, and Jack is an example of a student whom struggles with writing and goes into the course with little confidence in his own ability to write. The course's goal for a student like him is not to critique him on his formatting, but to help him develop a flow of writing, and make sure that he is making moves to inform the reader.…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

PADM 302 Course Reflection My primary goals for this course were to improve my writing skills in two specific ways. I wanted to be able to write with greater speed, but with apparent quality, and I wanted to be clearer in my writing. I had two strategies in mind to meet these goals. The first included becoming proficient at writing outlines and frameworks, which, I thought, would help me better adhere to my objectives for the papers I write. The second strategy was to learn methods by which I could become more concise in writing which would enable me to more powerfully present the points I wish to deliver in papers.…

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

While making changes to the text I implemented specific strategies suggested by the report. Those strategies include: distinguishing academic language from everyday vocabulary, contextualizing vocabulary instruction, and contextualizing through familiarity with genre and structure. When identifying the main ideas and key words I prepared the text for the students by underlining, or highlighting the items. Another option that can be used is, providing a separate list to be used as a point of reference. For consistency, the structure of the passage that has been adapted should be clear and consistent, this was accomplished by beginning each paragraph, or section of the text, with a concise topic sentence.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

English 106 was the first real college class that I ever stepped foot in, and because of that, I was extremely nervous and unsure. The English teachers at my high school always said that the papers they assigned were held to college standards, and I always did well on those assignments, but I was still unsure about this course. I expected this course to be loaded with reading and writing assignments that would make me pull all-nighters on a regular basis. After going through English 106, I realized that there were not too many assignments and that I learned a lot from each one. To me, the most salient parts of this course were the discourse community paper, the annotated bibliography, the art analysis, peer reviews, revisions, and reflections.…
