10 Tips For Choosing Athletic Shoes

Improved Essays
Who knew that purchasing the “right” pair of athletic shoes would be so difficult and essential. I used to and sometimes still do purchase shoes based on style and the name brand. I first learned about the differences in athletic shoes when I worked at a popular athletic shoe store as a teenager. During my time at the shoe store I became a shoe expert. I learned a lot about athletic shoes and their differences based on an individual’s need, especially for running and walking, as it was important to be able to answer customer’s questions. In the article “10 Tips for Choosing Athletic Shoes,” found on WebMD.com by Christina Frank, it references, “proper-fitting shoes makes all the difference whether you walk or run”. “Running and walking are among the purest, most natural forms of exercise”. The WebMD article states, “having basic knowledge about your feet and their specific needs” can assist you when purchasing athletic shoes. Here are some tips to know before purchasing your next pair of athletic shoes as noted in the WebMD article:

I chose the article, “Prospective comparison of running injuries between shod and barefoot runners” by Allison Altman and Irene Davis. The reason for this paper is that there are two contrasting ideas on what is better for running. Some people believe barefoot running is better because it reduces impact loading and promotes foot strengthening. Shod runners believe that barefoot running is associated with increased injuries due to the lack of support modern day running shoes provide. Barefoot runners tend to forefoot strike when they run while shod runners have the cushioning that allow them to heel strike when they run.…

An important aspect of everyday life is keeping good health. Runners often suffer a variety of injuries, starting with muscle aches, and ending with tearing an achilles’ tendon and everything in between. Without a healthy body, runners may not be able to run to the best of their ability or even at all. Running barefoot can solve a majority of issues associated with common running injuries, such as shin splints, muscle tears, and other frequent injuries. It has been brought to attention that the reason for most injuries is the fact runners land on their heels when they wear shoes; therefore not only can landing on the forefoot increase runner’s performance but also their overall health (Ingraham).…

Another point of interest other than the placement of foot is the magnitude in which the foot strikes the ground. Michael Sandler writes about a study performed by Harvard Scientist Dr. Dan Lieberman. Sandler tells of a quote from Dr. Lieberman which states “The point is that when you run barefoot you can have magnitudes of loading that are much lower than running in a shoe, and rate of loading that are equal to or lower than wearing a shoe…which is why it’s comfortable and potentially less injurious.” (Sandler, Lieberman). Running barefoot leads to three times lower impact forces and loading rates which suggests that “people who are barefoot or minimally shod have a better chance of avoiding injury.”…
