We rise to our expectations. When we have goals to meet and expectations to fulfill, we feel inclined to do just that, but it doesn’t necessarily mean we should. People make decisions based on what’s expected of them, but becoming “what you are capable of becoming” doesn’t always mean becoming something you are happy with. When the people all around you expect you to be something, when you just want to be someone else, it can foster unhappiness and loneliness. Goethe believes that,“if I treat you as though you are what you are capable of becoming,” you’ll become successful. But what happens when everyone has different ideas of “what you’re capable of becoming”? Success means something different for everybody and that is why the mentality present behind Goethe’s quote can do the opposite of promoting success. You can either respond by attempting to at least meet some of the expectations set for you, or doing the complete opposite. Many would prefer to do nothing and fail instead of trying their best and facing the possibility of failure. It’s a lot easier to justify your failures because “I just didn’t try,” instead of being confronted with the frightening possibility of failing even when doing your absolute best, of not being good enough. Setting expectations for others and “treating them as they’re capable of becoming,” doesn’t mean that they’ll rise up to meet the expectations and that’s what Goethe doesn’t
