Why does society feel the need to label everyone as if they have to fit a certain category? As people, we crave unification and perfection, but labeling only destroys it. For centuries society has been forcing labels onto people, whether it actually defines them as a person or not. False labeling happens too often, and it unfairly defines a person. In Shakespeare’s play Taming of the Shrew and the movie 10 Things I Hate About You the characters, Katherine and Bianca, are victims of societal labeling, therefore only being who others expect them to be, unable to form original personalities and reach their full potential.

In Taming of the Shrew Katherine calls Bianca, “A pretty peat”, and the conversation continues with Bianca admitting she enjoys being owned by men by reason of her obedience making her favorable (1.1.80). Bianca craves the affection of others so desperately she is willing to surrender herself to any man as long as they will be pleased, but she forgets to prioritize herself. In 10 Things I Hate About You a controversial scene occurs between Bianca and Katherine, and when Katherine tells Bianca she doesn’t have to act the way everyone else wants her to Bianca responds with, “I happen to like being adored, thank you”. Bianca blindly embraces her label because she confuses the feeling of popularity and favorability with her own joy. In both the book and the movie Bianca’s characters are people pleasers, which does not enable her to see her own self-worth. Regardless of the fact Katherine and Bianca feel completely opposite about their labels, they both have a negative impact on their personalities. Whether it is embracing labels for others or feeling labels are mandatory to be recognized true self is not established until authentic emotions are

However, I have realized that I don't have to just be a drama kid, or just be a dancer, or student publications kid, or any other group that I’m a part of. I can be apart of as many groups as I want to be. We learn from movies and media growing up that once we are in high school we are labeled as a certain social group. We think at that young age that’s who we are, that we are a nerd, jock, prep, or whatever group we hang out with.…

Society creates many stereotypes that are distinguishable by the general public such as, the saying boys will be boys and the correlation between girls and the color pink. Personally, I grew up as a tomboy, and still am today at age eighteen. Growing up as a girl does come with its own set of expectations that society sets. When I was in elementary school I always hung out with boys because we had common interests like playing soccer, going to the pool, and playing videogames. I never realized how much I defied the social norm.…

They’re a bountiful people in the nation who rather be original, while there are some people in teh universe who want to be an imitation. Additionally, from my perspective, it is better to be original than to be an imitation due to Rosa Parks standing up for her rights, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. views on segregation, and my own personal experience dealing with peer pressure. First of all, Rosa Parks was a female activist who fought during the Civil Rights Movement. In Montgomery, Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement, African- Americans had to sit on the back of the bus while the whites can sit on the front of the bus. However, on her own, Rosa Parks despised the fact that she had to sit in the back of the bus.…

It’s strange how society works. We fetishize the dead, having birthed the idea that art is somehow immortalized by the death of its creator, creating a sort of platform of romance to fill the void that great artists leave behind, irrespective of whether these figures would have wanted to be put on such a pedestal. The pedestal built for late writer David Foster Wallace is one of the truly unfortunate ones and as a admittedly selfish appreciator, I wish I had had the opportunity to read his work while he was alive. For an author who expressed many reservations about idealization, it feels wrong to romanticize him, especially as a young reader discovering him as he rises in stature within the mainstream literary community. But as a young reader…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…
