10-day Self Assessment
Over the 10-day period, I noticed various strengths and weaknesses in my communication. From my own personal assessment I think that I have good body language, so that what I am saying verbally matches what I am expressing through my non-verbal cues. I also think that I have the ability to adapt my communication depending on the situation, such as when I spoke to someone about a serious topic, compared to having a light conversation with someone I just met. I feel like I could work on my attentiveness and focus on what the other person is saying, as I have noticed that I tend to forget a person’s name after they have told me it. This usually happens because I am too busy thinking about how I am going to present

I was very busy and needed to get home, but I non-assertively agreed to do favours for others to avoid conflict, and because I did not want to hurt their feelings. I would have preferred to have been more assertive in my answer and directly explained my situation to them. Although they would have not been happy with me, I understand that I have to right to say no when it inconveniences me.

Day 6 (Wednesday, September 21, 2016)
→ I was assertive today when I spoke to my brother. I explained to him what he had done, how I felt about it, what I think should be done, and the consequences. I was respectful but also firm. I made sure he understood what I was saying through clear and confident communication.

Day 7 (Thursday, September 14, 2016)
→ I was slightly non-assertive today. Although I could have been more assertive with the way I spoke, I chose not to in order to avoid conflict. I believe that I could have been more direct with my answer, which is how I wish I‘d handled the situation. I should have spoke with more confidence and clearly expressed my feelings, all while being positive and

For week six, the activity was about confirming behavior, which is simply defined as the acceptance of a speaker’s identity and emotions as legitimate through the messages that are transacted. The activity itself involved five different real-life dialogues. For each, I gave either a positive or a negative response, dependent on the type of response as indicated. After having inferred the set circumstances, I reflected on how my answers were given in contrast to the rest of the class. As a result, our answers varied for all of them, just as expected.…

The general Cognitive-Behavioral based theory can assist in understanding the maladaptive behaviors that members of the Martinez family have developed. The foundation of this theory indicates that Evelyn and Tony have a distorted belief system that has “plagued” their relations with each other (Nichols, 2013). Their assumptions regarding their roles and about life expectations in general has poisoned their relationships and they merely communicate emotionally and behaviorally; often neglecting to think rationally to lessen their symptoms or work towards solving their problems. With Evelyn’s belief that her husband is to blame and has “unfixable” traits, she is unable to think of ways she can solve the family’s problems. Regarding Tony, he has…

    John Siegel Experience

I relate best to the short excerpt from Dr. John Siegel. He describes how the discussion at a meeting among colleagues at a hospital began to digress as the subject was changed from the main focus of the meeting (educational experience for patients) to side issues such as frustration with the medical system. By reminding his superiors of their primary goal (to provide excellent medical care to their patients) he inadvertently prompted them to consider the common values that they share which led them to their chosen profession. This got the meeting back on track and the committee was able to successfully restructure their education plan.…

    The Importance Of Bigotry

Bigotry is seen by most of the world as an unholy, damaging, extremist act that is never to be done and it should not done or be given even the smallest bit of attention. To me, however, bigotry is just another perspective. The “Twitter, Hate Speech, and the Costs of Keeping Quiet” essay got me thinking about the importance of perspectives. If I see or believe something from my perspective, even if it’s considered to be offensive or demeaning towards a person or group, I put it out there. If I don’t, how will I know that those thoughts are valid or credible?…

Throughout my week, I would write in my Interpersonal Communication Journal about all of the different types of conversations I came across. Not one conversation was the same. They were all about different topics. Each journal entry I would write, however, had all different aspects to them.…

Final Field Project For this assignment, I chose to interview my boyfriend Michael Hook. Throughout the time we have dated, he has always been someone I’ve admired and continuously pushes me to become a better person in all aspects. I wanted to interview him because the story of his company, to me, is pretty commendable and an interesting topic to discuss. Considering we have been dating for over four years, there was no research needed to prepare for this topic; we have discussed his job various times. For the opening, I began by thanking him for agreeing to participate in the interview and taking the time to answer the questions fully and to the best of his knowledge.…

    Essay On DISC Assessment

Having never taken the DISC assessment before, I was unsure about what to expect. I thought it was fairly accurate in many ways, but I felt that it very much tapped into what I consider my “work” self and did not cover much of who I am outside of that. I scored a high average score on the D spectrum. This seemed accurate, as I am relatively competitive overall, I like looking at the big-picture, I don’t mind taking risks, I can be critical of those that don’t measure up to my standards and I am very interested in new and innovative things.…
