1. How do I define discrimination in my own words?
Discrimination occurs when an individual faces unfair treatment because of the prejudices directed toward a group to which that individual belongs. I used the word unfair because I think that is an important aspect of the way discrimination is applied in today’s society. That is to say, discrimination in America does not just mean that different groups of people are treated differently; it means that different groups of people are treated unfairly.
Further, discrimination does not only occur when there is a formal rule or policy in place that accommodates, encourages, or insures unfair treatment. Individuals can engage in discriminatory practices both casual and formerly. Individuals who do

What actions or strategies would I include in my Discrimination Prevention training program that could increase awareness and/or reduce the negative impact that discrimination has had on my life or on others’ lives in their place of employment?
Education an extremely important and effective way of combatting discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination prevention trainings can help employees to become more aware of their behavior and therefore self-correct. Also, sometimes accusations of discrimination against people who have not been exposed diverse groups can cause them to become extremely defensive and therefore stubborn about the way they do things. Exposing employees to discrimination early and often can get them more comfortable with the issues and open them up to changing their behavior.

What did I learn as a result of completing this assignment? Describe how I now think about this issue as a result of identifying a proactive strategy(ies) for addressing discrimination in my life or on the lives of others if/ when it occurs in the future.
This exercise got me to think about workplace discrimination in a whole new way. Before I though deeply on topic I thought about the individual perpetrators of discrimination were the only ones responsible for fixing the problem, now I realize everyone needs to work together to fix the problem. Managers should encourage non-discriminatory behavior and policies. Observers of discrimination should intervene. Victims of discrimination should be able to report the situation. All levels and areas of an organization should be involved in fighting discrimination.
Finally, the most important thing to remember when considering discrimination prevention is all the positives that come with cooperation, diversity and learning. It is easy to simply focus on the negatives of discrimination. However, I believe a much stronger message can come from a focus on all the positive things a diverse set of viewpoints can bring to an organization. A wide variety of voices and contributions helps and organization to find the best and most innovative solutions to any problem. Also, working in an open and cooperative environment can increase creativity across the board. Fighting against discrimination does not only help minority groups; it is a benefit
