Although many of the songs on which Starr was the lead vocal were written for him, he did contribute two compositions to the Beatles canon: “Don’t Pass Me By” and “An Octopuses Garden.” In his first compositions, Starr shows complete understanding and acceptance of his persona. Starr’s first contribution to the Beatles canon, “Don’t Pass Me By,” came six years after the release of the Beatles first single and was worked on, by its composer, for five years (Macdonald 286). The song is a “country-and-western style embellished with bluegrass violin”…

I have never thought of a hero being just a regular person with a talent and a kind heart until I heard of Tyler Joseph from the band Twenty One Pilots. Whenever you have to make a choice, he says there will always be the easy route. That is the route that can give you what you want right away. But in the end, that’s the wrong choice. Most of the time, the right decision requires work.…

Most songs that have a significant meaning are written on a personal level by the artist. Secondly, another poetic device that Kendrick Lamar uses in his song is irony. Irony is when an event occurs in which is unexpected in the sense that it is somehow in mocking opposition in what would be expected or appropriate. When Kendrick Lamar uses irony, it is in a very serious and thought provoking way. For example, in line 63 the speaker says, “Cause you tried to change your life and now you live in a wheelchair.” This line is ironic because it talks about how someone tried to change their life and instead of it getting better, which is what is expected, it got worse by the person becoming handicapped.…

With this song he uses his personal history to let his listeners know that he is using his music to express his views rather than using his status to make money off of the genre. Macklemore is conscious of the fact that he enjoys white privilege, however he shows that he appreciates and respects the roots of the hip-hop genre. That being said, there are some white artists who grew up in the exact same situations as some of the African American artists. These artists tell similar stories of gangs, political oppression, and financial hardship. Macklemore is just one example of a handful of white hip-hop artists who understand that they are the minority in this style of music.…

After finding out his now-ex girlfriend has been unfaithful, he portrays diligence to harass her by narrating his plan of action for revenge in the lyrics, “I’m gonna aim my headlights into your bedroom windows, throw empty beer cans at both of your shadows”. Thus, implying the desensitization of society into perceiving violent portrayals in breakups are of the norm. The binary in this song is that due to his girlfriend cheating he is obligated to act violently to shame the woman, to which he justifies his actions in the lyrics, “You know you broke the wrong heart, baby, you drove me redneck crazy.” His motives are excused supposedly due to his broken heart and plays ‘victim’, where as the real victim is left oppressed. Statistically, women are much more likely to be the target of stalking threats (ARS, 2010), this is reinforced by the ominous lyric, “I’m the kind of guy that shows up at your house at 3a.m.”…

The media perceives Taylor Swift as nothing more than a clingy, manipulative, and crazy young woman who jumps from relationship to relationship. Being the lyrical genius she is, Swift created the song "Blank Space" in 2014 to defend her position with this preconceived notion. She uses many rhetorical devices to explain her position in this argument against the media. With the beneficial use of rhetorical devices, Taylor Swift shows that boys will only stay if it is worth a fight, and that she is fully conscious of the media representation.…

    Migraine Analysis

The song “Migraine” by the band Twenty One Pilots has many meanings to it, and a lot of meaning to me, the writer, singer and pianist Tyler Joseph, and the drummer Josh Dun. To begin the song itself is not really about an actual migraine, but more so what it represents. This song is about depression and mental illness. I relate to this as myself and a few family members have battled with mental illnesses our whole lives so the perspective of someone else provides emotional support. Also, viewing mental illness as something else, something that isn’t as daunting, (in this case, a migraine) helps to overcome it.…

I hardly agree with Bakan’s third proposition, which states that “sound are organized into music by people; Thus, music is a form of humanly organized sound”. I don’t believe that music should be defined as humanly organized sound since music means differently to different people. Music can be any kind of sound, as long as the one listening to it considers it as a form of music. First of all, I believe any sound that an animal makes alone is a form of music. In the book, Bakan thinks that only when a human being uses a given sound for musical purposes, such as sound of birds and whales, does that sound actually enter into the domain of “music”.…

OutKast, a popular rap group throughout the nineties and early 2000s, has a renowned song entitled “Hey Ya!” which features the smooth flows of Andre 3000 and hard hitting rhymes of Big Boi. The song has been a huge hit for years and is virtually known by every American under the age of thirty. When the song was released in 2003, I was just three years old, but had already adopted my dad’s love for music and I frequented the kitchen tile as my dance floor whenever music was playing. OutKast’s song “Hey Ya!” holds a different weight than most other songs I grew up around because it is one of few memories I remember vividly about my childhood.…
