Five Key Learnings:
• Wiggins and McTighe (2005) state that “The ability to transfer our knowledge and skill involves the capacity to take what we know and use it creatively, flexibly, fluently, in different settings or problems, on our own” (p. 40). We are only able to teach a limited amount of skills in a relatively short time frame. It is our hope that students will be able to take what they have learned and apply it to many different situations and aspects of their life. If our students can do this, then we have been successful as teachers.
• “To get beyond mere rote learning and recall, we have to be taught and be assessed on an ability to see patterns, so that we come to see many “new” problems we encounter as variants of problems and techniques we are familiar with” (Wiggins and McTighe, 2005, p.40). I have told my class many times that during our Daily 5 rotations it is so important that they take the time to read and practice. I understand that families are busy, mine is too. However, I think it is important to set time aside for reading and practice. I may feel this way because I am a teacher, but I have tried to give families little ideas for how they can fit this in at home by doing minimal tasks. I know that I have students in my class that do not get this practice time at home, so I try to maximize my time with them at school by providing read to self or partner reading time throughout our day. I stress that this is their time to read and to practice and my time to listen to them and help they along the way. I love listening to students read, especially those who struggle so I can give them the encouragement and tell them how smart they are so they will continue to try and continue to grow as a
