I believe, that as a caregiver, you have the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life by how you guide them. Guiding children can happen in many ways; in how we direct the child throughout the day, encourage them, aid in decision-making, and in how we model healthy and safe choices. In these the caregiver must be consistent and act as is appropriate given the child's development.
The way I have learned to guide children has mainly been through experience, trial and error, and by observing my parents as well as other parents and caregivers. I soon adopted many practices such as giving young children choices when problems arise. The child is often more willing to cooperate when they feel that they are able to choose for themselves,
