Environment plays a huge role in children's learning. The use of space, lighting, and materials, contribute greatly to the environment and the students' engagement. As an educator, you want to engage the senses of students, while challenging them, and promoting interaction. The ideal classroom is one that creates a safe space for children, and allows them to experience culture, growth and interaction. "The role of the teacher includes designing an educative environment and collaborating with children to master new skills (Hull, Goldhaber & Capone 2002)." Stacey fulfilled the role of a "player."The teacher as a mediator is not simply managing behavior; she is teaching social skills and suggesting ideas to enrich play (Jones & Reynolds)." This is exactly what I noticed in the classroom. For example, whenever there was a conflict, Ms. Brittany was there to help the students through finding strategies to solve the problem. She watched closely to see how she could ensure students were fully enjoying the play. At times she would walk around the room putting away some items the students were finished playing with, but pulling out new items they hadn't touched yet. My study of this environment has helped to develop my beliefs of teaching. There is so much more to being a teacher than just teaching letters, numbers, and phonics. You are developing these students, minds, senses, social skills, reasoning skills, and so much more. I would like to create this safe space students need and find ways to always meet the needs of every single student.
