Improved Essays
It is the responsibility of Educators to teach children about diversity to prevent discrimination, cause till now they have been introduced to the culture, values and traditions of their own family.
- In small groups I would make conversations with children about diversity and encourage children to have their say and opinions, be open to discussions about the way they feel, share within the group, things they have seen, heard or experienced.
- Read books to the children about being respectful of each other’s differences and arrange small group activities on what they have learnt and understood from the book.
- Organise excursions where children will be able explore and be introduced to different cultures and experience this for themselves.

As I was reading Chapter 1 Ramsey talks about the multicultural goals that teachers and parents should have for their children. I think he does a very good job at explaining why certain activities and why we should have these goals set for our young children. He breaks up these goals and explains them into different groups; Strong flexible identities, Sense of connection, Critical thinking skills, Confidence and persistence, and Optimism and activism.…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…

It is very important, not just for all the educators and staff members working at the early learning setting to be culturally competent, it is also important that the children become culturally competent and don’t discriminate or say anything inappropriate towards people of another culture. Ways educators can be a role model to demonstrate accepting of all people of all cultures and to try and stop discriminating behaviour include; have regular discussions with all students talking about other cultures and countries, educators can celebrate various cultural festivals/ celebrations through activities and arts and crafts, for example for Easter the children can have an Easter egg hunt, for Chinese new year you could get the children to colour in dragons and make Chinese lanterns, for St Patricks day educators could do an activity involving four leaf clovers and the colour green. Even if there aren’t any celebrations at that time in the year you could still do cultural activities such as getting the children to colour in their own boomerangs, or get someone in to play African rums for the children, and educators can always read the children books about other cultures.…

One of the most important topics that should be thought of before entering into the education field is how to create a safe and inviting supportive inclusive learning environment for all students. This is something that many education majors discuss within their classes and with one another almost on a daily basis. In order to have the best learning area for a student, one must think about all the different elements that goes into a student’s learning abilities. For instance, not all of your students will learn the same way, as each student has a different learning style. One student may grasp a concept faster than the other, while some may be labeled with a cognitive learning disability.…

They should also model intercultural relations, such as multicultural friendships and create a home environment that teaches their children diversity amongst cultures (p. 292).
