Social work values require those in the role to demonstrate a commitment to anti-discriminatory practice and anti-oppressive practice. Personal values, prejudices, beliefs and attitudes can change how practitioners respond with service users; these can be done either obviously or discreetly within the professional relationship (Heydt and Sherman 2005). Meaning social workers must can challenge their own beliefs and characteristics. It is important for social workers to be sensitive to the needs of other adults, especially if they have communication difficulties. Social workers must refrain from communicating with another adult differently unless essential.…
One of the most beneficial ways in which a social care setting can challenge anti - discriminatory is through staff development and training this may be done formally through supervision sessions or more informally in the course of day to day working. I supervise the work of their staff, offer advice and guidance in difficult situations and help the workers identify training opportunities to improve their practise.…
Anti-discrimnatory practices can also be promoted by being a good role model. Children and young people will look up to and see the adults that work with them as role models. Every adult that works with children and young people, needs to be aware that the actions and behaviours they portray and the things they say are noticed by the children. Children tend to copy and imitate people they look up to, so when working with children, adults need to act professionally and portray an image that is non-judgmental. Adults need to show respect to all individuals regardless of their culture, religion, ethnicity or disability.…
After reading these three chapters I found a quote on page 41 that I think really sums up the idea of an anti bias education. It says, “Listen carefully and with an open heart.” Young children are always trying to make sense of the word and the idea’s they create in their heads are not necessarily signs of prejudice. It’s important for us to remember that children can’t always communicate what they think or how they feel. So as teachers we need to listen and figure out what they want to know.…
As a care professional, you will come across discrimination, it is important to sort this out in the first instance and not ignore this kind of behaviour. The best way to approach this is to look at ways to challenge discrimination and make a positive change. Discrimination often occurs when there is the lack of understanding of other people who are different to you. Being ignorant, insensitive and fear where difference is perceived as a treat. It is important to recognise stereotypes in attitudes or written materials, report concerns, question and adapt to beliefs and attitudes, to keep to policies and procedures and consider practising positive discrimination.…
Syracuse University’s anti-discrimination policy prevents all individuals from being discriminated or harassment due to race, color, creed, religion, sex, gender, national origin, citizenship, ethnicity, marital status, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable law to the extent prohibited by law. The anti-discrimination policy is useful because the University prohibits any such discrimination or harassment which prevents any conflicts in the workplace. Anti-discrimination also prevents the purpose or effect of creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment; or the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's work performance; or can affect an individual's employment. The anti-discrimination policy at Syracuse University is enforced by human resources. However, employees who…
Affirmative Action is often referred to as “reverse discrimination”. The thing is discrimination is discrimination no matter who it affects. Affirmative Action is defined as when a minority is put ahead of a non-minority. Affirmative Action is often used in college admissions and in employment decisions. The purpose of Affirmative Action is to fix 8discrimination by putting the non-minority at the disadvantage.…
Kendra makes another good point. People do behave differently. Sometimes people get nervous around others. I’ve heard a few stories from other people in the where they claim that the police officer used their nervousness as a way to search their vehicle. Most of the time the police officer does find drugs or weapons in the car, but it is true that abnormal behavior may further the investigation of the suspect or citizen.…
1. The definition of race in our text is a socially constructed category of people who share similar biological traits that people in society consider important. Physical characteristics are usually the main form of classification people rely on when classifying one another racially. Examples of these physical characteristics would be skin color, facial features, body shape, and hair texture. We like to think of race in terms of biological elements (or inheritance of genetics), but in actually it is a socially constructed concept.…
Jennifer, I agree with you. Any kind of discrimination and racism in any shape or form should not be tolerated as it only results in prejudice towards an individual or a group. Stereotypes are often inaccurate as they are formed by applying generalizations about a group to an individual. Those who choose to discriminate against minorities know very little about that ethnic group and solely based their knowledge about that group from stereotypes. It is sad to learn that the Chinese had to keep quiet in order to survive in a society that did not accept them from who they are.…
First of all, what are discrimination and prejudice? These two words, as defined by Merriam-Webster, mean respectively: “the practice of unfairly treating a person or…

History in the United States has some good endings like the independence of 1776, but with the good part there is a dark part of history. Slavery started in America in 1619, which African Americans were forced to work hard labor all day and this went on for more than 200 years, until it came to an end when the Civil War broke out in 1861. It ended in 1865 and it abolished slavery, but it was never easy for African Americans even after slavery abolishment, in the 1880’s Jim Crow laws were enforced which kept whites and colored people apart, a practice called segregation which lasted until the 1960’s. Affirmative action is no longer necessary because it acts as reverse discrimination, puts race in consideration when hiring, and it reinforces stereotypes.…
An Analysis of Reverse Discrimination in America “Until black people as a whole gain power, it's not a question of where you are geographically, it's a question of where you are psychologically. No matter where you place black people under present conditions, they'll still be powerless, still subject to the whims and decisions of the white political and economic apparatus. People of color lack the institutional power to discriminate against whites.” This proves racism against blacks in America still exists, and the new theory of Reverse Discrimination baffles the minds of many. People are often dumfounded by this and try to rule it inconclusive.…
