‘Sustainable Tourism is a Myth.’ To what extent do you agree with this statement? (15 Marks)

Sustainable Tourism is essentially an industry committed to making a low impact on the natural environment and local culture, while helping to generate income and employment for local people. As Global economists forecast continuing international tourism growth, this continuous growth will place great stress on remaining biologically diverse habitats and indigenous cultures, which are often used to support mass tourism. Therefore it is important that sustainable tourism is promoted and that people are educated about the opportunities provided in order to minimize the effects that tourism poses on the natural environment while helping to benefit

In Costa Rica, government has actively promoted ecotourism with small-scale sustainable tourist developments such as one in the Monteverde cloud forest. In this area 80 new businesses have opened in Monteverde since the 1970's and there are now 400 full-time and 140 part-time jobs directly related to tourism. Consequently, in this area studies show that it generates more income from tourism than all of the Costa Rican National Parks put together and there is also strong evidence that Monteverde has been contributing to higher household income and better overall standards of living for local people. Besides this, the reserve actually budgets to train and educate locals and tourists about ecotourism and protection of the reserve in order to minimise the impact that tourism has on the natural environment. This type of education is clearly paying off as access to the cloud forest is strictly controlled with trails in both reserves only limited to certain areas, allowing wildlife to exist undisturbed elsewhere. However, many areas close to the trails have less wildlife, showing that humans do disturb and have an impact on them and some activities that tourists can take part in don't necessarily appear sustainable e.g. monorails through the canopy and zip lines.
