The Crucible Themes

There are a lot of themes in this play such as Intolerance, Hysteria, Reputation, Empowerment, Accusations, Confessions and Symbols. I will be explaining each one and how they go along with the Crucible. In the Crucible they have many beliefs and often did not believe lying, so when someone said something they believed it and would not think twice about them lying. These themes go along with the play very well and they help get a better understanding on the play. The crucible has a theocratic society which means the state and church are one, they follow the religion strictly and will not disobey it. At the very beginning of the play Parris accuses Abigail of dishonoring him and he then makes so very serious accusations about her. Giles and Proctor are one of the first to respond to it and they responded in a kind way. Soon everyone else joins in the response of being kind. Most of the witch trials were based on the women making accusations against everyone and anyone they could. John proctor attempts to make things right by admitting to his affairs with Abigail but his confession was trumped by an accusation against him of witchcraft. In this play there is little to no symbolism but during most of the play you can see the symbolic of the paranormal about communism. But the person to face the most problems was John Proctor and his wife may have gotten a few of his problems. Elizabeth had to go through the challenges of accepting the fact that her husband John cheated on her with Abigail. She also had to learn to be independent and on her own during the time of the witch trials. She could not really rely on anyone at the time so she had no one. A test that Reverend hale had to face was being able to change who he was before it was too late, because if he did not change a lot of lives would be lost. At the beginning of the play he was ready to find the witchcraft and do anything to stop it and by the end of the play he just wished all the lies would stop. Abigail’s test was to see if she could be the better person and not ruin the whole time but every time she had the chance to destroy something she would with no
