Perception Versus Reality
The novel, The Outsiders and the play, Sorry, Wrong Number, talks about the misperception of Ponyboy, an orphaned kid who lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Stevenson, a woman who lives in a house with her husband and maid. Mrs. Stevenson also thinks she is ill and adored by others. Mrs. Stevenson and Ponyboy both have a misperception of the people in their lives. They also believe differently of, or about, the people they live with.
Ponyboy believes Darry, his brother, does not love him as much as Sodapop, his other brother. When Ponyboy and Darry was in the middle of a fight, Sodapop ran out because he was upset and pressured of being a “middleman”, in page 175 it says, “ Soda shrugged. I don’t know. Stevenson to Murray Hill 4-0098, Mrs. Stevenson overhears a murder plan. In the call, lines 86 through 105, it says, “ 1st man. Okay. You know the address at eleven o’clock, the private patrolman goes around the bar on Second Avenue for a beer. Be sure that all the lights downstairs are out. There should be only one light visible from the street. At eleven- fifteen a subway train crosses the bridge. It made a noise in case her window is open and she should scream. Mrs. Stevenson Oh -- hello! What number is this, please.” 1st Man. Make it quick. As little blood as possible. Our client does not wish her to suffer long. George. A knife okay? 1st Man. Yes. A knife will be okay -- and remember remove the rings and bracelets, and the jewelry in the bureau drawer. Our client wishes it to look like simple robbery.” Right after the call Mrs. Stevenson overheard, she called straight to the Police Department, but Duffy, the policeman, did not believe Mrs. Stevenson because she would not participate in what Duffy said instead she gave Duffy attitude. While Mrs. stevenson tried to call the hospital someone interrupted the call, Western Union, they said, “ I have a telegram for Mrs. Elbert Stevenson.” Mrs. Stevenson replied, “ I’m Mrs. Stevenson.” Western Union read the telegram, it reads, “The telegram is as follows: “Mrs. Elbert Stevenson, 53 North Sutton Place, New York, New York. Darling. Terribly sorry. Try to get you for last hour, but line busy.
