In the 21st century, poverty and inequality exists. Kathy Edin and Luke Shaefer wrote the book “$2.00 a day”. It is based on their observation and evidence they gathered how Americans who are poor are surviving based on $2 or less. Their evidence shows how much difficulty it is to survive on barely $2 a day. Initially during the 1970’s, there were full-time employment and wage stagnation but times have changed since the recession in 2008. These days’ people, businesses and companies no longer want to hire new people. Instead, they create opportunities by building minimum wage jobs and make them only part-time in order to save more money comparing to working full-time and getting the benefits of a full-time worker. …show more content…
Crimes are of many types from carrying a gun with no warrant to murder. Each day someone is being arrested for a crime but sometimes, the police may arrest someone who may not have done a crime or may have mistaken for someone who has done the crime. Also, police have been involved in police brutality as they harm the people they are meant to protect. It had led to murders such Trayvon Martin and Philando Castile, who are both shot as police reported it self-defense when in reality the victims were not carrying any arms and were just simply minding their own business. These shootings have brought in an outcry of how the police and justice system are flawed and how it has jeopardized people’s safety. Police officers would arrest people for even the slightest amount of contraband with them, especially the minorities carrying the contraband. For any white individual carrying contraband, it would be a slap on the wrist, which is basically a hefty fine which can be paid. African Americans have been in the system for the smallest amount of contraband, even though it could be just a fine. The prison system initially was public owned but now has shifted to being private owned and private run. The system has allowed private companies and private businesses to profit behind these prisoners’ backs. They do all the work but no credit is given to them due to the fact that they are felons. By 2000s, over one million inmates were African American and was criticized by the government.
