The disease of the skeletal system I chose was plasmacytoma (with some mentions of myeloma). My article includes a case study with a 44yr old male named Mr.J. He had a complaint of lower back pain during his four-week follow-up. He is a very active and healthy male based on his diet and exercise. During the physical examination, he showed no signs of distress. Mr.J did have tenderness in the lumbar region, but no lesions were noted here. Everything else about him appeared normal with normal muscle strength and tendon reflexes. An x-ray was performed and found a single focal osteolytic lesion in the lumbar vertebrae. He also had a differential diagnosis of solitary plasmacytoma of bone(SPB) by the team and they planned a workup to rule out multiple myeloma. …show more content…
- In multiple myeloma, mild hemolytic anemia can be seen, whereas in SPB the hemoglobin levels are normal. Elevated creatinine and blood urea nitrogen are seen in multiple myeloma; the renal involvement isn’t present for SPB. High levels of monoclonal protein in serum and urine are indicative of multiple myeloma. The SPB typically has absent or low serum or urinary levels of monoclonal protein. Preserved levels of uninvolved immunoglobins in patients with SPB are evidence that tumor load is low.
