You think summer is hot, think again. Although copper is a common metal known to man, there may be a few interesting details that you did not know about the element. Such as how hot you must heat copper before it melts into liquid form, or how the smallest dose of copper could make a major impact on your health. The uses of this metal could open up new opportunities and inspire new innovations that may have not been thought of before. Copper dates back almost ten thousand years and has been a…
The Human Battery Do males or females produce the most electric current? Abstract The Human Battery Do males or females produce the most electric current? Abstract The purpose of this project was to determine whether males or females produce the most electric current. An aluminum plate, a copper plate, a micro ammeter, two lead wires with alligator clips, water, notebook paper, and pencil were used as materials. It was predicted that males would produce a greater electric…
Copper, also known as red metal, is one of the basic chemical elements. It was the first metal used by Neolithic humankind to supplement for stone tools dating back more than 10,000 years. Copper comes from copper ore, which is dug from the earth is melted and shaped into desired shape. Hydrothermal, heated water deep in earth’s crust seeps through cracks and fissures and dissolves certain minerals in the rocks, is the process that form copper. The mineral is carried along with hot water…
includes setting up a DC power supply, an ohm resistor, a Vernier Current Probe, and two connecting wires. Chemicals and Equipment used: In this experiment, many different chemicals and equipment will be used to collect data. A copper strip and zinc strip are the main electrodes being tested in this experiment. 1 M will be used to soak the electrodes and to conduct a…
Introduction Brass is an alloy, a combination of copper and zinc. It contains around 67% copper and 33% zinc. Commonly, Lead is also added to brass at a concentration of around 2%. Lead improves the machinability of brass. Lead brasses have excellent machining qualities and can be blanked, sheared and milled. Brass does not become brittle at low temperature like mild steel. Brass also has excellent thermal conductivity. Its electrical conductivity ranges from 23 to 44% that of pure copper.…
Determination of Identities of Zinc, Sodium, Beryllium, Copper and Boron By: Shreya Uppala, Lizzy Jolly, and Kyrie Harrell Results: The first element we tested was zinc. Since zinc was already known, the density was stated to be 7.13g/mL and the hardness was a 2.5 based on the Mohs Hardness Scale. No magnetic attraction was observed when in contact with a magnet. Zinc had a shiny appearance with a light gray color and the strips of zinc added to solution were approximately 5 cm. When zinc was…
Silver, lead, arsenic, bismuth, antimony, selenium, and nickel are common impurities existing in copper anodes. Some impurities dissolved from the anodes can precipitate, if their concentrations in the electrolytic solution are above saturation levels. Some of these precipitates can settle down but some are floating slimes and can be a source of cathode contamination by their incorporation into the cathode 16. These floating slimes are amorphous and typically have compositions of Sb-As-O and…
While the list had a very large number of different materials that were located in the shop, I only will list the chemicals that would present an industrial health hazard to an employee using them and chemicals that are used in every battery repair. Since some repairs use different chemicals and different processes, I decided to narrow it down to a very basic battery repair that would be done at the Fairmont shop I visited. First would be sulfuric acid, which is used in the cells of the battery…
The purpose of this experiment was to see how single-replacement reactions change the physical matter of the original reactants. Hypothetically, the use of 2.120g of CuCl2 should react with the iron nails forming exactly 1 gram of copper. Upon starting the lab process, there was a displacement of 2.120 grams of CuCl2 into the plastic cup containing 50 ml DI water before joining the two iron nails. After the solution sat overnight, the iron nails became black in exterior color, orange copper…
dissolved. The liquid solution produced a blue color as soon as the cupric sulfate dissolved. Prior to this 1.127 grams of Zinc was gathered along with Hydrochloric acid. Both the Zinc and Hydrochloric acid were poured in gradually creating a reaction. A stirring rod was used to stir this while the reaction occurred. Figure 2 shows the reaction in action. Before long less Zinc became visible at the bottom of the beaker. Copper became visible at the bottom of the beaker all at the same time. The…
