This belief is backed not only by the General Motor’s case but also Valentin (2001: 54-69), who states the limitations of the SWOT analysis and the lack of insight it provides into competitors strategies (Bradley, 2005). Respected theorists have proven that a clear understanding of competition can lead to increased corporate performance (Hooley et al., 2012, p106 and Kapelianis et al., 2005). From this point it’s fair to claim that In order to gain a competitive advantage through increased corporate performance, marketing researchers and strategist must understand the competitor and their strengths in order to act upon them. One approach to this can be to take an outside-in look rather than the traditional strategist approach of inside out (Kenny, 2014). This method allows strategists to look through the eyes of consumers in order to identify weaknesses and improve strategy to suit current demands and trends.
