1980's, Noam Chomsky introduced a theory of Universal Grammar (UG), which stated that the knowledge of grammar was dependent on two components: principles, properties shared by all languages, and the parameters, the way in which these properties vary. Controversies abound with the UG model, but it does explain how all natural languages are similar in some respects and how humans are able to learn their first language as well as other languages. UG simplifies the ideas about learning a second language by claiming that "learning the grammar of a [second language] is not so much learning completely new structures, rules, etc as discovering how to set the parameters for the new language." Although UG "has left untouched a number of areas…

Genie had no real capacity to learn language. This phenomena of severely decreased ability to learn something as someone ages is called a “critical period.” Something is expected to develop within this time and if it does not, it is significantly harder or even impossible to learn certain information or develop certain skills (Genie). Famous development psychologist, Noam Chomsky argues children are not taught grammar but acquire it through socialization—we are preprogrammed to develop language…

The theory of pro: An Italian perspective Introduction Universal Grammar (UG) is a linguistics theory which supports the idea that all human languages, although different in the surface, share some fundamental principles. These principles are generally true across languages, while parameters, on the other hand, are settings that allow for variation from language to language (White, 2003, p.2). The Extended Projection Principle (EPP) is a principle common to all languages which states that a…

Evans argues that language faculty is not a device, which is incorporated into the human brain and that evolution of language was facilitated by cultural intelligence through the gradual process of social changes and evolution of earlier communication systems. Chomsky and Pinker base their theories on Universal Grammar concept, which is the assumption that languages have a similar design and universal structure. The counter argument, which Evans presents to prove their theory to be wrong, is…

believed to be true and correct. We then compare the both in part two. Nativist Theory - Chomsky The nativist theory is a biologically based theory, which argues that humans are pre-programmed with the innate ability to develop language. And that we are all born with language skills. Chomsky 's theory of Generative Grammar is a way of describing the way people learn to communicate. This is a naturalistic approach, but one that has found ever increasing acceptance amongst experts with…

genetic blueprint that humans have honed over time. The general idea of the Language Acquisition Device (LAD) created by Chomsky, is encapsulated by J. Searle ‘The fact that all normal children can readily acquire the language of the community in which they grow up, without special instructors and on the basis of very imperfect and degenerate stimuli, and further that children can learn certain sorts of language such as are exemplified by natural human languages, but cannot learn other sorts of…

analogous to the nature view. (As an aside, it may be important to point out that Plato’s views had many other implications that are not considered viable today, and that thinkers like Noam Chomsky would not consider themselves a “Platonist.”) This point serves to underscore the long debate about this topic, and may raise questions about the futility of any real progress on the issue, as it has been raging for 2,300 years. The major proponent of a genetically inherited innate property of…

relevant to music skills, but also to how humans acquire their communication method. Children’s ability to learn a language so rapidly and easily within the first few years of life is due to the way one was born and how one was raised. Even though assertions that language is developed predominantly from either biology or life experience are compelling, it is more insightful to present both humans’ genetic make-up and environmental factors together when examining first language acquisition.…
