Advantages of the star topology is that it is very east to connect new devices to the network and it does not affect the network in any way. Disadvantages of the star topology is that it depends on the central device too much, such as a router. If the router goes down all of the devices will disconnect from the network. Overall the star topology gives you the most options and the best performance out of the rest of the topologies. Below is an example of what a star topology looks like.
