The third and most important factor is that they have come to a rational and objective understanding of their individual traits and how these can be connected to the labour market and individual jobs. Parsons devised seven stages which a practitioner should work through in interviews with clients. The first stage involves collecting personal data, where key information about the client is gathered. The next stage is self –examination but under the guidance of the practitioner who records any dispositions which could have a bearing on career choice. The third stage which might already have appeared in stages one and two is to consider the client’s own vocational preferences. The practitioner then analyses this career choice to test if it is compatible with the main lines of thinking. The fifth stage is where the counsellor alerts the client to labour market information and training. In stage six advice which is both logical and follows clear reasoning is offered to the client by the practitioner. Stage seven is where the client is aided in the process of fitting into their chosen occupational area. There is also space for the client to reflect upon their decision. We can see a lot of Parson’s work in guidance practice today and it still provides a useful starting point. However it relies upon a stable labour market and as today we generally have…
