and is interrelated with step three which is recognition and acceptance of his or her spontaneous self. While the client is in control, the counselor is clarifying feelings and emotions (Rogers, 1992). During this time, clients often make a breakthrough. This breakthrough is associated with the discovery of the real self. After this breakthrough comes the following step of making responsible choices. These choices are entirely up to the client but for Tommy may include finding what path, and career, is right for him after following in his father’s footsteps and finding that isn’t working for him. The final step is growing into independence with support. This step-by-step process is a process that Tommy’s intelligence level may allow him to find easy to follow. Tommy could benefit from being able to share his feelings freely in the beginning because of all of the trauma that he has had. During this process, there are three main techniques…

I am interested in teaching at Breakthrough as a Teaching Fellow this summer because Breakthrough is where I discovered my passion. Working with the students as a volunteer last summer, and as a teacher during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school-year program, was something I looked forward to every day as I got to know each of our special students.
