In addition to the way the loyalty program functions, it is important to also consider the type of the rewards being offered to the customers. Generally, these rewards can be placed into two categories: monetary and non-monetary. When choosing which rewards to offer, it is crucial to understand how these rewards will effect consumer behavior. It is easy to see why marketers would choose to offer monetary rewards. First, rewards, such as discounts, can stimulate customer purchases by providing direct financial benefits to customers. Additionally, a savings feature may increase the rate of customer retention by creating switching costs. (Van Heerde and Bijmolt, 2005) Surprisingly, customers often attribute this received discount to their own effort, which then induces positive emotions that are they will associate with the company (Kivetz, 2005). On the other hand, monetary rewards train consumers to be more sensitive to deals, pay more attention to price and search several places before buying. (Yi and Jeon, 2003) Additionally, it is never recommended to reward customers with tangible goods, like sporting tickets or free hotel stays, instead of merchandise discounts or rebates. Research shows these types of rewards have a very limited impact on the customer relationship and cost more than other, more beneficial rewards (Roehm, Pullins, and Roehm, 2002).…
