    Blood sucker, dead, predator: These are all words that can describe a vampire. There have been several vampire stories throughout the years. Each author takes and gives them different characteristics but they usually are universally described as a creature that was once human that somehow has returned from the dead and preys on living humans by drinking their blood to stay alive. Dr. John William Polidori, an English writer and physician, is said to have created the first written vampire story in his short story The Vampyre: A Tale. This story became the framework for other vampire stories and many of its elements are still true for modern vampire tales. Polidori’s success of creating a horror story are due to his techniques in creating mystery, and his ability to effectively portray the setting, plot, and characterization. Based on those successes this tale definitely should be included in literary anthologies. Though vampires’ characteristics can vary from story to story, the vampire Polidori describes, Lord Ruthven, is very similar to modern day vampires. He is described as having a “deadly hue of his face, which never gained a warmer tint” (246). This tells us that his face is always constant with the same hue of paleness. The narrator describes this hue as “deadly” foreshadowing he could possibly be part of the living dead community. Despite the deadness of his face, he is also described as “handsome, frank, and rich: for these reasons… many mothers surrounded him”…
