    Spelling Bee Controversy

think that it would matter where I stood in line, so I smugly took my place behind everyone else. I was going to qualify for the spelling bee anyways. One year before, I had qualified for the Big Springs Spelling Bee, and finished in the top 6, the highest placing for a fourth grader. Among my peers, I was widely regarded as the smartest fifth grader. I had skipped the second grade and had been involved in R.E.A.C.H., the gifted and talented program at my school, since kindergarten, the only student in our grade to do so. Considering the other achievements I had already completed, qualifying for the spelling bee would have been a minor accomplishment. Several days before the spelling bee, our teacher, Mrs. Ayers, had notified us that every student would participate in a mock spelling bee until there were two students left, and those two students would represent our class in the Big Springs Spelling Bee. When the day of the spelling bee came, I was not nervous at all. Mrs. Ayers began the spelling bee, whistling to get…

The Form in My Bag “And if you are interested in going to the spelling bee, make sure to tell your mom or dad so that they can fill out this form!” said my second grade teacher, only five years ago. As I heard those words, my ears perked up. I had gone to the spelling bee last year, and I had actually won fourth place! I got a ribbon and everything. As the day went on, my mind wandered to other things such as, what was for lunch today, and how long until I could go home. By that afternoon, I…

I was the most behind in my class and would get sent to the principal’s office often. When third grade came, Mrs. Perna took a different approach to her teaching and I quickly realized she was very different from Mrs. Ellis. Mrs. Perna, my third grade teacher, made learning more intriguing by adding spelling games. Which made spelling interesting since I was very involved in sports and it brought my competitive side to try my best. Mrs. Perna would also read us short stories she wrote herself.…

I had always been what some would call a “good student”. I never got in trouble, and I never went into the principal’s office. I did my homework most of the time. I made good grades, and I even made it to the spelling bee two consecutive years. The first year I was in the third grade. I remember that year vividly. During the semifinals I completely obliterated my opponents. It wasn’t even close. The spelling bee that day lasted maybe only 20 minutes. I flew through those words like Donald…

Lost in Lust The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, with music and lyrics by William Finn, book by Rachel Sheinkin, and conceived by Rebecca Feldman, explores a lighthearted event, as the play title suggests, a middle school spelling bee. I watched the production on February 7, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the University of Washington’s Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse. This production was directed by Brandon Ivie, musically directed by Jordyn Meeker, and choreographed by Steven Sofia. This musical…

hiding behind her “special effects.” On the inside, she was actually a kind person that was willing to help a friend. As we came to know each other more and more over the years, she became my best friend. True photo or not, a perfect photo moment can be lost in an instant. One second it is there, the next second it disappeared. While trying to finding the best angle, zooming in, beautifying the quality, the photo can be lost in a blink. The only element that genuinely matters is the end product…

I was out of place in that class as we were just learning the basic of the language such as the alphabets and numbers, and I already knew most of these, the thing I despised the most was memorizing the order of our president’s names since I was never skilled in memorizing most things. After the first hour I had to walk back to my second grade class, I was also older than most of my classmates as there was a weird policy of if one’s is to be born after august, they must stay behind a grade. This…

It is something that has carried it on throughout my entire lifetime because of its valuable use today's world. Without writing, I am able to do and prepare for the things I could do today. Without learning how to understand and read words, I wouldn't even know how to spell my own name. The influential people that are around me today have benefited in many ways also on my reading and writing skills without my mom and Ms. Doolittle I would probably still be spelling my own name wrong to this very…
