    Shivana Quotes

After reading the second section of the book I feel bad for Shivana. She is willing to do anything to get an abortion and she is extremely desperate. When she meets the cab driver she engages in sex with him just to make more money. She then has a breakdown because she realizes there will be consequences when she goes home and her mom finds out that she is pregnant. Another example of when Shivana is desperate is in this quote “Jump on my stomach and make me lose this shit.” She is willing to go through pain just to get rid of “it.” She is scared and she wants to have everything back to normal. My favorite part is when she learns the name of the boy she has had her eyes on. His name is Rasul and she likes him despite his physical appearance. She likes the way he treats her and she feels at peace. For the first time, she gets a sense of what it feels like to fall in love with someone. I really like this quote “That first day, we just talked, for hours and hours—about everything from school, to the block, to memories I thought I had forgotten.” This quote makes me think about how you can have a connection with someone and you can talk about anything with him or her. You get the feeling that you have known them all your life. When Jewel leaves with Rakim, Shivana is devastated. She is really going to miss her aunt. Her aunt brought happiness and peace to the household. I can definitely relate to this when talking about my uncle Marcello. He surprised us for Christmas and we…

I work alongside her and a few other students from Emmanuel from 3pm – 5:30pm on Tuesday afternoons at the elementary school’s after–school program. The students I work with range from three years of age to six years of age. When I first started this volunteer work, I immediately noticed the interesting dynamics between Ms. T and her students (scholars). It…

A pure white peacock is not exactly subtle metaphor, but it is certainly a memorable one. Which is suitable considering Toni Morrison did not write it into Song of Solomon for giggles. The white peacock represents how materialism prevents flight, or more accurately freedom. This theme is more thoroughly elaborated on with Milkman’s development, as demonstrated by what happened after his first attempt to steal gold. Due to a chance detail Milkman shared with his father, a mad story about a murder…

the parade finally reached were we were located and it was instantly amazing. There were so many floats and costumes and the people who were doing it seemed to enjoy every minute of it. There was such a wide variety of different species in the parade, I was only able to note a few; peacock (my favorite), crabs, butterflies, flies, seaweed, lions, mermaids, fish, bees, jellyfish, a geoduck and so much more! Over the course of the parade, onlookers looked just as amused as I was and were enjoying…
