Water, one of the highest of holy rebirth references in existence. In The Road by Cormac McCarthy the two characters, the boy and the man, take a long journey, including a struggle of death versus life shown through the use of symbols to represent both sides of the struggle. One of the heaviest symbols in the novel is McCarthy's use of biblical references in many forms to portray feelings of hope and rebirth/resurrection, while also showing filth and irony in that of the water in the new yet extinct world. McCarthy presents the symbol of water in a very Biblical rich manor. “One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. On the road baths in super clean water are not a regular occurrence as water proves next to impossible to find and when found, the boy is bathed as the father knows the importance of the boy being clean. In today's society clean water comes almost second nature in that almost all Americans have clean water either in a bottle or coming out of their faucets, while on the road the only water easily accessible is filthy and soot filled. “Down there in the darkness was a cistern filled with water so sweet that he…

Hazel Motes, a grotesque character warped by his experience in World War II, is a noticeable example because his name not only reflects his character, but it also contributes a religious context to the story. The name Motes is an allusion to the biblical verse that condemns judging others for the mote in their eye when there is a beam in your own (Matthew 7:3). This biblical reference not only touches on the issue of judgement, but it demonstrates the struggle with hypocrisy. Hazel constantly…

By using twisted Christian symbolism, Stephen King was able to capture the essence of the occult nature practiced by the children, and heavily professed by their leader Isaac. As children from infant to almost adult make up the majority of the story's character base, the symbolism of childlike innocence is provoked and disturbingly twisted within Children of the Corn. Evil is woven throughout the story, as Isaac and his followers perform demonic rituals and murder mass amounts of people,…
