In the song “The Sound of Silence” by Paul Simon the diction is conveyed very well in which the writer is trying to help us to imagine what is happening in the dream. In an article entitled “Song Analysis: Sound of Silence” by Wizzler the author states that “In the 1960s, the middle and upper class majority held the expectation that no one should disturb the silence or voice their controversial opinions”. For example, the phrase “Silence” is used at the end of every stanza to help convey the voice that the people in the 1960s did not have and to represent absence of change. The fear of this “silence” is conveyed as a “cancer” in this song. Like finding a cure for cancer during this time making a change seemed to be nearly impossible. This song…

Both characters feel isolated, lonely, and trapped, eventually falling for women who feel their lives are dull and boring. Goodbye, Columbus and The Graduate are similar stories with similar themes; the difference is in how they are presented. While the former…

I have never been a fan of Paul Simon’s music. However, the best song off his Graceland album would be, “You Can Call Me Al.” The song has a memorable tune where I can “bob” my head to it. The song holds meaning. It is about becoming aware of your surroundings, which I can easily associate myself with. I have always been drawn to lyrics that make me self-aware. The Paul Simon Graceland Controversy was about how Paul Simon was going against the apartheid boycott. However, in his mind, he was…

In life it is easy to assume that because someone has money, and fame they have it all. "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson, and "Richard Cory" by Paul Simon prove how wrong that theory is. Richard Cory is described as a man who had everything "Power, grace, and style" ( Robinson, 674) Richard Cory is the man that everyone liked, and everyone wanted to be. On the surface everything looked and seemed great who wouldn’t want to be well liked, and rich? Well inside Richard Cory was hurting…

Seen throughout various instances, individuals often envy those who have more money than themselves. This concept is clearly depicted in Edwin Arlington Robinson’s “Richard Cory”, as well as Paul Simon’s remake of that poem into a song also titled “Richard Cory”. The poem and the song are essentially about a rich man named Richard Cory, who is admired yet envied by the people of his town. Little do they know that later on, the man will take his own life, even though he was sought out to have the…
