This leads to a number of issues unique to each kind of disk. These issues and the other properties in general, of the control and servo-mechanical systems of hard disks (magnetic) and optical disks are explained in this paper. Introduction Magnetic and optical disk control share a lot of common features like using spinning media to store data, maintaining track relative position during reading or writing of data, encoding using circular or circular spiral tracks, and seeking to a specific track using actuators. Algorithms used in one type of disk can also be used in the other type of disk and this is, in fact, common practice. Despite such similarities, magnetic and optical media control also have a number of differences. 2.
