It’s a warm and humid summer afternoon in Kansas City. So humid where you can just feel your skin becoming moist and sweaty just from standing outside. The gym is even more hot and uncomfortable. I’m a young adolescent in grade school watching my oldest brother play competitive basketball. Normally, I’m forced to attend these activities as I’m too young to be at home by myself. There were about 200 people just packed in one big gymnasium. Parents spectating, players working their tails off, and teams warming up and stretching ready to compete. The loud whistles from referees are blowing, basketball shoes are squeaking, and shouting from the coaches making play calls. His freakish athleticism was almost impossible to stop and he could score on anyone. I remember him particularly because he was one of the top rated football players also in the greater Kansas City area. My brother befriended him at a very early age and I knew him my whole life. At the tournament, my brothers team was…

Living in Olathe, Kansas, a large suburb outside of Kansas City, did not prepare me for the move to Salina. The benefits of living in a larger suburb are that the high schools can really help you prepare for the transition to college level classes. I did not take the help the school gave out into consideration when going to classes. My senior year was when everything clicked into place and I knew what I want to do with my life, and that was flying. Ever since I was a little kid, planes have…
