Suspense is an element of fiction building on foreshadowing and other aspects of fiction that creates a tense, anxious, or excitement. I chose the film Silence of the Lambs to describe suspense because this film in particular touched me in a suspenseful way. The basis of the movie in itself is suspenseful; police investigations and attempts at stopping a serial killer who is at large creates an exciting atmosphere. Its themes also create some suspenseful aspects to the film that are also applicable to life. The themes present in this film include gender--the main character is a female FBI agent, making her a minority and a kind of outcast in certain situations, who also faces some harassment due to her gender--and manipulation. Another theme involves identity, which is also connected to gender in many situations. Out of the films watched in class, this one also worked more of the elements of fiction to a suspenseful angle. Silence of the Lambs utilizes visual aspects of film, such as types of shots and lighting, and characterization to create suspense. Visuals in this film that produce suspense include camera angles--point of view shots and close-ups--and lighting. The point of view shot occurs multiple times throughout the film; one instance where this occurs is Clarice Starling’s point of view is used when she enters a new area, which depicts her being in unfamiliar territory and creates an uneasy feeling. Another type of shot used is the close-up, which shows the…

Last year, I had the opportunity to meet and listen to one of The University of Georgia’s greatest running backs in history, Herschel Walker. Being the UGA fan that I am, I was a little star-struck when meeting the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner. He worked with a medical agency touring Department of Defense locations while promoting the ideals of seeking mental health care when needed. Mr. Walker cared so deeply about advocating to apply for treatment, he went as far as self-disclosing with our…

Born in Dodge Center, Minnesota in 1923, Shirley Mason was an American commercial artist best known for having her life documented in the 1973 best-selling book, “Sybil.” In her childhood, Mason was subject to continual sexual abuse. to occur to-there is no available catalyst in which the story may take place in. Not only that, but the setting also fulfills a stylistic purpose-in many cases, the setting of a story gives insight to the reader into other aspects of a story, such as a character 's mindset, a certain instance of foreshadowing, or even to hint to a reader of nuances within the characters or the plot of the story. The setting, in short, is not only a necessary part of the makeup of a story, but is also something…
