A famous woman once stated, “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and, snap! The job’s a game.” Even though Mary Poppins is a fictitious character, she makes a great point in leaders creating an environment in which their employees or ministry members can enjoy. It stands to reason the more enjoyable the workspace, the more enthusiastic everyone will be in reaching goals and achieving greatness. In light of this, leaders must know how to revel in the triumphs of their group, create an enjoyable (key word being joy) workplace for their employees, as well as be able to remind their people why they are part of the business in the first place. Kouzes and Posner (2008) quote William Hwang, who states, “I have learned over the years that it is not the size of the gesture that is important, but the simple fact that you noticed someone’s contributions” (p. 127). At times, it is beneficial to let followers know they have been recognized for their hard work and dedication. Head Pastor at Beulahland Bible Church in Macon, Georgia has created an environment where he identifies the church as a whole responsible for providing enough funds to make the necessary changes to the parking lot, the new…

My experience in the Mary Poppins cast has been probably one of the best things to happen to me so far in my life. At my old school in 10th grade I was in theatre, then the following year I was bullied out, and I desperately missed theatre. It was my life, I enjoy it so much and it is such a part of me. So coming here and deciding to audition on just the second day of school was a really big deal for me. I was absolutely terrified to, but I stuck through and did it anyways, and I am so happy…

Walking into the theatre space at the Jewish Community center in Louisville felt very like entering a high school gym doubling as a playing space. L. travers and the Walt Disney film, with original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. The book was written by Julian Fellows, and new songs and additional music…

When I was in the musical Mary Poppins my sophomore year, the discussion backstage has changed to politics for some reason. One kid, a freshman member of the dance ensemble, claimed that he was glad the Donald Trump was President. Everybody else except me and another guy in the locker room, about ten boys, turned around and started to insult and argue with him. They called him some very mean things and told him to go back to his farm where he belonged. I met eyes with the other silent guy and we…

Mary Poppins When the Banks children are in need of a new nanny, Mary Poppins is forcibly blown in be the East Wind. In the story, Mr. Banks makes the observation that “Admiral’s telescope says East Wind. I thought as much. There is frost in my bones.” ( pg.5) The East and West winds are a symbol of change or trouble to come. The wind controls where Mary Poppins goes, but it does not seem to take her against her will. “It was as though it had flung her first at the gate, waited for her to open…

In October 15, 2015 on a chilly Thursday night, students, parents, and teachers attended the Mary Poppins broadway musical. Upon entering the theater, students handed out colorfully designed programs. Attendees who came earlier nearly filled up all the seats, but luckily there were a few seats left. Either the staff at Xavier were ridiculously talented at promoting the musical or perhaps the attendees simply knew that they were in for a treat. Lights darkened, the announcer greets the…

Chimney Sweeper is a term that can create many images in most people’s minds. Most people will think that being a chimney-sweeper, would be a glorious job. This opinion is due to the representation in the movie Mary Poppins. In the Walt Disney classic, the chimney sweepers were in a cheerful mood to dance and sing on the rooftops. Chimney sweepers, usually are not in the mood to dance around, like in the movie. Chimney sweepers, although quickly seen, are represented accurately in the movie…

Mary is represented as icons, drawings, paintings, and apparitions, such as La Santa Muerte, La Negrita, Our Lady of the Rock, Madonna, The Virgin of Guadalupe, and Our Lady of the Wall. With there still being many more, all of this just undoubtedly proves how incredibly substantial her influence is. It is completely reasonable to believe in Mary’s influence because “to look at [her]…is to look at God’s original plan for humanity” (Nouwen, 1989), as mentioned in class: she is the ultimate…
