There he was, orange hair, black square glasses, sitting in his chair with an “I’m the best” look on his face. I really do not like Arnold. Arnold looked alot like the boy from the Magic School Bus. I try just as hard as he does, maybe even harder and he always ends up with the best overall grade in the class. The last day of every year in elementary school, the students were handed their yearly report cards. My grades did not interest me at all as a 2nd grader. What mattered to me most was not my grades, but my reading level. Every year all of the students take a reading test a week before school ends. The test determined the reading grade level for each student. As I was handed the pasty white envelope containing the single most important document of my 2nd grade year, I was teeming with anticipation. My 2nd grade year I stepped up my effort. I had been reading for hours and hours every day. My 1st grade year Arnold, A.K.A Mr. Smarty Pants, finished the year with a higher reading level than me. I knew that this year things would be different. I would finally be able to see the face of envy from Arnold. I ripped open the report card, ferociously scanning the paper for the section that showcased my reading level. There it was, at the bottom of the paper. The number was clearly printed in Times New Roman and would be very bland, usual text for anyone else, but not for me. It stood out like a sore thumb. I was reading at a 6th grade level. I worked so hard to gain this number.…
the book Writing on the Wall, written by Mumia Abu-Jamal, an American activist and¬ journalist who was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death for the killing in 1981 of a white Philadelphia police officer, Daniel Faulkner (Abu-Jamal 2015). Despite the fact that racial profiling violates the constitutions’ core about equal protection of the law, it continues to be a problem today as it has been used in law enforcement tactic by the police to characterize the targets that most likely to be…
But the best way to thank me is to get involved." Words are nice. Actions are better. No sour grapes here, just a sense of disappointment and a little bit of anger. I don't expect everyone to be Manning or Perez, but the world needs more heroes and less cowards. For me, the question remains: How can we as organizers, activists and artists cultivate courage? First, by telling the stories of genuine heroes like Manning, Perez, Kathy Kelly, Mumia Abu Jamal, and others. After all, if we don't tell…
Throughout the 1920’s cinema became established as the most popular and profitable mass media, and this continued until the 1960s. Historian A.J.P Taylor famously described it as “the essential social habit of the age”. People went to the movies as their main leisure activity. The social experience of cinema going was often an escape from what could be very difficult social conditions and the rise in cinema attendances during and just following World War Two were up to 31m per week in the UK…

More contradictions between "Hamlet" and "King Lear", whereas "King Lear" has consistently honest or moral characters, "Hamlet" appears to have conflicting and compromised characters. Whereas "King Lear" is a clear and happy moral story, "Hamlet" appears to be vague and disturbing. Whereas "King Lear" has Christian morals and values, "Hamlet" has modernist and enlightened philosophies. In other way, they are complementary, as "King Lear" is clear and compelling, the characters consistently…
Isaiah Isaacson During the early 1900’s, the relatively new concept of film was emerging as one of the most popular forms of entertainment. As more and more improvements were made to the motion picture camera filmmakers were able to begin exploring the realm of creative possibilities they could achieve. Two notable films that that did this are Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera, and Sergei Eisenstein's Strike. Both films are known for their groundbreaking use of montage and the powerful…
The studio system in the Golden Age of Hollywood was a method of film production and distribution between the 1920’s and 60’s. Large motion picture studios wanted to maximize their profit and minimize the risks of going bankrupt. They turned to producing movies on their own film making lots and they were especially skillful in handling employees, and contracts. The use of long-term contracts was very effective in keeping costs lower than they otherwise would have been; and it helped studios…
