The various mirrors adorning the green room taunted me. It didn’t matter where I looked; I saw myself standing alone. It had been no different for the past year and a half. This was just the first time that I’d been able to see it, as the walls reflected back a desperate, teary-eyed loser. I’d been used. Used for my homework and for my home. The thing is, it becomes so easy to create demons when you’re feeling hurt. When your heart gets broken you tend to seek out fault, be it in others or in yourself. The reality is that the issue is rarely so black and white. Nobody has to be wrong when romantic feelings…

many years of doing theatre, you would think I would have learned to be calm, but I wasn’t. Far from it, actually. The butterflies in my stomach made me queasy, the waiting made me anxious, and the noises that surrounded me gave me a headache. I wanted the wait to be over; I wanted to get on that stage and just start acting so I could be done with it. Yet, I also didn’t. I didn’t want our play to be over; I wanted to stay on that stage forever. It was the last show of our school’s version of…

I hold the chapbook in my hand and question what the contents may hold. I breathe a sigh as I open it and see the first poem titled “The Green Room”. I reassure myself by saying “the chapbook is safe, the author is a faceless entity” and I begin to read her words. “The Green Room” gave me a feeling of melancholy and I assumed that the chapbook would be a theme of childhood memories from the viewpoint of an adult. When she speaks of the “green carpet” I was able to see in my mind’s eye the shag…

The classroom infused with joy and summer warmth was all but quiet. Seventh grade voices echoed through out the small space. Banners hung on every wall, some drawings, some influential quotes. The last moments of the school year edged closer, and joy erupted from the students. Brisk breeze blew throughout the room, intruding from the open windows. Loads of student desks were arranged around the room in a square-like formation. Parody music filled the homeroom, children either singing along or…

When she opens the door of the shower, steam rolls out and fills the rest of the room. As she steps out of the shower, she wraps herself in the soft material of her vibrant orange towel. She wipes off the foggy mirror and begins her nighttime routine. She gently washes her face to remove the oil and sweat that accumulated throughout the day. She then applies a creamy green face mask that reminds her of the aliens with rough, green skin she imagined when she was younger. As the face mask dries,…

As I opened the door to the abandoned, old, haunted house on my street, I started to think that maybe this wasn't such a good idea. I scolded myself for wanting to turn back, and hesitantly stepped inside to explore. My ombre hair and dark brown eyes made me practically camouflage in the tan-brown, wood-paneled foyer, except for my old grey hooded sweatshirt and comfortable red sweat pants. I was the average height for a 16 year old, maybe a little more scrawny and immature. I could feel the…
